I am running windows xp home edition sp2. I have been looking at some articles relating to internet security and many of these articles suggest changing the name of defalut "administrator" account and the best way to do thins is to load the computer management module and expand "Local Users and Groups". However when i load this module that option is not there. I do have the other options under system tools i.e Event viewer, Shared Folders, Performance logs and alerts and device manager but just not "Local Users and Groups".
How can i get this back?
Regards
Andy

Well, this thread is pretty old and you may have found the answer but I would put my 2 cents anyhow. Windows XP Home Edition doesn't include the Local Users And Groups option.

in this case - how can i rename the default administrator user name (i.e the user name that comes up when you boot windows in safe mode?) and add a password to this account? I have been told that taking this step can help provide more security for you computer!

Yes, adding a password to your administrator account is very important. To change the name and add a password, 1. click on Control Panel, 2. Click on user accounts, 3. click on the default account, 4. click on change my name, (enter new name) 5. click on add password and enter your new password.
Something else you may want to consider is creating a new limited account for your general internet browsing and email accounts. The limited accounts don't have authority to install or change programs so it can make it a bit more difficult for malware or a hacker to get into your machine.

Andy, you can try safe mode. Go to safe mode and then, password that account using User Account in control panel. Just give it a strong password.
