Hello Everyone: Can someone tell me how to do this. I right clicked on a picture and it states "Choose" which program you want to open this pictured in and I chose Paint, and then I clicked on Always open this picture in Paint! But when I go back to the picture it is still opening with Art Studio. How can I get ALL Pictures to open just in "Paint" Thanks, Tom

Some programs are hesitant to "give up" the file associations. Try opening Art Studio and unchecking all the file associations you don't want it to open. Or, if you don't really use it, uninstall Art Studio.

Another way to overcome problems of this nature is to use c:\windows\Winfile to set associations. This is the old 16 bit win3.1 file manager interface. Being such, it uses the 8.3 filename structure.

Dan, Would you believe I did a search for 'ArcSoftPhotoStudio and it says its not even on my pc? I did bring it up when opening a picture and tried to delete the entries to it but they would not remove. Let me know what you think and Thanks. Tom

I don't know what platform you're running but is it not listed in Add/Remove Programs? If it's not listed seperately it may be "embedded" in some other "suite" software. Or, it may be one of those stand-alones where all you have to do is dump the files into a directory and create a shortcut to the program.

If you're comfortable in the registry, and you don't want the program any longer, you could search and remove entries that way. All the normal cavets apply. Backup the registry first, etc.

That picture program is not listed in Programs?

Not knowing what OS you are using, in 98SE you can change file association by:
Start> Programs> Window Explorer> click View tab> choose Folder Options> scroll the list and highlight the type of picture you want to open with Paint then browse to Paint and double click it or choose select.

In XP it's:
Start> Control Panel> Appearance and Themes> Folder Options> File Types> scroll to JPEG or whatever kind of pic it is you want to change and highlight it and then click change. Paint should be in the choices that open up in a new Window.

Thanks, Ok, I made all the extensions you mentioned to open in Paint, and they still open in ArcSoft Photo Studio. BTW, I did a file search and also a Registry Search and they both turned up ArcSoft Photo Studio as NOT being on my pc. Yet when I click on open my jpeg pictures they wont open in Paint? I even looked in the Add/Remove Programs list and it is not listed there either. What do you think is going on? Thanks, Tom PS: I am using xp home edition.

Well this is baffling me but what else is new???

If you have the Arcsoft program, you may want to install/uninstall it and see if it gets removed properly on second try.

I cannot unistall it from the add/remove, its not there. but I did find it on the pc and put it in the recycle bin, then I went back and made sure paint was default and tried to open again, and wouldn't you know it, a screen came up and said windows cannot find arcsoft photo studio, do you want to search for yourself?. I clicked No and then restored it from the bin, just incase! BTW, how would I install it if I do manage to remove it from my pc. This is a oem HP preinstalled thinger?

See if theres a uninstaller for arcsoft in its installed folder, or maybe theres shortcut for uninstall in its start menu folder, try it form there. Other wise use the re-install and uninstall approach.

But I would suggest,
There must be some option in arcsoft to associate disassociate file types. Look on the menu, probably on options or preferences, or whatever. Disassociate picture files from there and then associate them with paint so that arcsoft won't seize 'em back.

And some progs, you can choose what file types to associate while installing, eg Photoshop lets u do that.

CuratoR: When I opened the arcsoft screen I saw all my jpeg's in there and I tried one by one to remove them, but they would not remove. Now this arcsoft is no where to be found except I did find a folder for it and in the folder it looks like an Uninstall link. Now if I uninstall it, where can I reinstall it if I need it in the future (which I doubt, but never know)? Thanks

This is a oem HP preinstalled thinger
Such preinstalled bundles can usually be installed/uninstalled by using that OEM's restore facility rather then the "normal" add/remove programs route.

tom,
If you want to install it again, you have to have the installation source, either the CD, or backed up installation source on hdd, from the internet or any.

Well, If it came pre-installed on your HP, check out your HP cds. You may have been given a separate(installable/re-installable) cd for that. Or maybe be it is integrated on the restore CD, in which case you may have to use the restore function to install that which would not only install arcsoft but the whole OShttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/eek.gif.

Just look through the cds that came with your HP sytem.

I just recently did a Destructive System Recovery, so everything should be in order. BTW, Is it possible that this ArcSoft Photo Studio was installed with my HP All-in-one-printer compaq3000 not HP computer recovery? Maybe that is the culprit download! What do you all think?

I was right, it was installed by the compaq3000 printer. If I delete it all out, do you think that would probably make the default Paint work then? I dont use this Arcsoft photo studio anyway!

If you are not using the Arcsoft software deleting it is the best way to get your file associations back in order. But if it was installed by your Printer, then there should be some trace of it in the Add and Remove Programs. It will be under the name of the other printer suite software. If for sure there is nothing there, try looking in the Program File folder where you found the Arcsoft program. Look for an uninstall executable. If you just delete the files the registry will more than likely retain information about Arcsoft and your PC will continue to give you the message that it can't find Arcsoft, do you wanna look for it manually. So just remember, Uninstall not Delete.

So just remember, Uninstall not Delete.
Good advice, always. Whenever possible.

Tomtom,

(Aside) I had a Compaq printer and there were quirks with the software so I got an HP. It would add text in a NotePad document when I went to print it. Something along the lines of 'Get a Presario' But in another pc with an older BIOS, it would not. (/aside)

I don't know if these are options or not with your printer but something to consider or search out:

A: When installing the driver program, if the cd opens automatically, try closing it. Then open it with a right click and 'Explore'. Look to see if the picture program can somehow be side-stepped and if there are installers for the other associated softwares and the printer drivers themselves, install the ones of your choice. You'll need to do it from scratch though, so uninstall your printer programs (best) through Device Manager or the uninstall choice in the printer's installation files (second best).

Then reinstall your printer. Don't use the Add new Printer wizard if it does not offer any options but rather use the .exe's on the cd.

B: Sometimes you can get the updated drivers from the manufacturer for your printer. It usually does not include the bundled 'extras'.

C: (I forgot what I was going to say here so,,) Just toss the printer out of at least, a 2 story building...

D: All of the above... :D

What I really want to know is what's on that All-In-One disk through Explorer.

Locobato: I was thinking along the same terms. I did find a arcsoft file with an uninstall ISU file, so I guess thats it? Thanks

Fruss Tray Ted: Now I think I remember that arcsoft being at the tale end of the printer disk, I should have taken it out before it finished install that part, but I had no idea it would take over like that.

So, I will uninstall it and hope there is no more associations with it!!! Thanks

Thanks to ALL

Don't 'pull' a cd from the drive in the middle of an installation, rather, do as I said above. Examine what is on the cd. If you need help, just keep this thread ongoing. I can't answer, nor experiment in a lab (my mess :o ) 24/7, but there's plenty other geek 'drive-by's' that are keeping tabs on this topic. ;) If not, I'll catch up when I can later.

I am waiting for the Compaq team to get back to me, If I dont hear from them soon I will just do the mentioned above and get back to all with the results. Later

Couldn't wait for Compaq so I tried to uninstall it with the only uninstall file I found in its folder. It would not open unless I selected what program to use to open it and I may have picked the wrong one but that is all I saw. Here in the attachment is where I stand now. What does this mean anyone know??>

Are you trying to uninstall this from within the program? If so, don't.

It's starting to look like you may have to totally uninstall the parent program. Once accomplished, set your file associations with the appropriate programs you want, then attempt a reinstall of the parent program. But this time, choose "Custom Install" and deselect what you don't want. If the program won't let you do this, then ~I~ wouldn't install it. If the whole purpose is drivers for a device, those can be found elsewhere.

Parent Program= Do you mean uninstall the 3000 Printer and reinstall but choose Custom install? This software (arcsoft photo) (if I remember right) is at the end of the installation of the printer! So maybe its possible to stop installation before Arc but after actual printer installation?

Absolutely!

This is where you'll be able to choose which programs you'd like. Or not, too...

I was able to uninstall the arcsoft thru the Photo studioSE.folder as you guys suggested (it had an uninstall under the second name) did not have to touch the printer at all. But had to add "New" extension (jpeg iimages) to the file types, because it deleted the jpeg extensions there. Thank You all for your help. Tom
