I have been surfing this forum as regards remote pc accessing and note that there are several progs that can do this. Let me say that I wanted a free utility and not something like Pcanywhere.

I have a couple of questions as regards TightVNC:

1. I wanted to have remote access to a relative's computer in the U.S (i'm in u.k). My pc ('remote') is on a LAN behind a router and the 'server' pc is on dialup. Is this going to be problematic. I understand that upon starting TightVNC the icon in the system tray will provide the IP address so that I can access it from the remote pc. Furthermore, is this connection going to be slow or painfully slow.

2. As regards setting a password at the server end. I read the 'installation' blurb at TightVNC and it is very unclear. Is password setting a lot easier in actuality than as described.

3. Security. I note that TightVNC has SSH tunneling for Unix systems. Ok what about for win32 ie 98SE and XP o/s. I don't want this VNC connection to create some vulnerability(ies) in my systems so that I can get hacked into or worse..........

4. I wanted to use a web browser instead of the 'viewer' since the 'server' end of the connection is a pc that is by all accounts infested with so many horrible progs that I want to make sure I don't get a 'dose' of it...........
The installation guide says '..point your web browser at: http://myhost:5802/...'. Ok, so I open my browser and type in http://, then what, the ip address as given by TightVNC's 'server'. Lastly, as regards the 5802. They say to connect to display 2, type 2 at the end of 580x. By display do they mean 'monitor' and if a pc only has one monitor would I type 5801 ?

Apologies for asking a whole load of stupid questions but the 'server' end will be manned by someone who when '...asked to go back to the desktop.....' replied ' ........I can't see the desktop icon.......'

Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
