I am using DELL C600 with Win2k SP4 installed on it.
It's about 3,5 years old and wasn't new when I bought it, so I don't know if the battery was ever replaced with the new one.
When I bought it about a half year ago it could run for about 2h on the battery power. For a couple of months it remained the same. But suddenly, about a month ago i've noticed that the battery lasts only for 30 mins. I've tried to discharge the battery completely and charge it again (i've heard this helps to solve the "shortened cell" problem with Li-Ion batteries) but it didn't help.
After a few days I've noticed also that even if Windows shows that there is enough power to work about for 30 mins, only 5 mins was enough to discharge the battery. I've decided to try discharging the battery fully again. When i've done it, it shown up that the battery won't load anymore.
It was about a week ago. Battery still refuses to charge and the indicator stays at 0%.
For the last half year the computer was running mainly on the AC power with battery removed. Only on weekends battery was installed and then the notebook was running with or without AC according to the situation.
I have two questions:
1) Is the battery permanently dead? Or maybe there is some way to make it charge again? Did it wear out due to the lapse of time or maybe improper use? And should it happen so rapidly?
2) If the battery is really dead, is it safe to still have it installed in the computer (to fill the "hole" after it)? If yes, then can it remain plugged constantly or should it be disconnected when possible?
