Hi, all

I have encountered the problem described below, it happened once few weeks ago, but for the last few days it's playing up more often, would love to hear some opinions.

Basically after shutting down windows, the CPU fan, case fan and PSU fan continued to spin, but everything else shuts down e.g. monitor, hard drive, CD rom. So I manually turned them off by switching off at the wall.

The next day I tried to start the computer by turning on the power at the wall, (without actually pressing the POWER button of the computer) the CPU fan, case fan and PSU fan started to spin spontaneously; then when I pressed the POWER button of the computer the whole thing just shuts down; and when pressed further there was no response at all.

Couple hours later it just came right by itself i.e. i could turn the computer on normally. However it's happening more often now.

So is it a PSU problem? or a mobo problem? or even something else?

Currently, I am using 350W PSU, AMD 2600+, 512 ddr ram, 120GB HD, 6600 GT, and gigabyte GA-7N400L nForce 2 motherboard and CDRW drive.

It sounds like you have it set to go into suspend mode and not shut down.
Check your bios settings for shut down options .

Has the power switch got stiff or sticky? It may be the switch is sticking on so when you power on at the wall it is already effectively pressed in. Can you disconnect the case switch wires from the motherboard and connect two spare wires temporarily to the pins? Touching the two wires together will act like a switch to switch the computer on. Make sure you do not let the bare wires touch anything else.

If you are not confident in your electrical skills do not try this.

lamentra,
If you are comfortable opening up the case and removing/re-inserting hardwares, plzz open up the case, remove all the expansion cards(PCI,AGP), memory and then re-seat/re-insert them firmly and properly. See if the problem goes away? Make sure the system is completely powered down(disconnect from the wall socket) before you attempt that.

Plzz post back.

Hello

To make sure about this problem first of all remove the source (PSU) and try using another one. If you're not able to do this then unplug it from the motherboard and plug it in. If it starts spinning and without you to switch it on then you've got an issue with it, probably it's main power switch. My opinion on this is either you've got a bad consumer on your system or the PSU is damaged.

Before opening the case and doing any actions to your box please make sure you've unplugged it from the wall.

Cheers
