Hello,

I have a home network with a router that is tied into my DSL service. on my home network, I have a computer serving as a file server using WinVNC to access the system remotely. I want to be able to get to it from the Internet but since my router's IP address is dynamic, I can't always get to the file server, but I do know the MAC addres of my router so I was wondering if there are any utilities that can return the Public IP address of the router knowing the MAC address of it? It would have to be able to work from the internet since that is where I am trying to access the computer from.

Thanks.

Hiya Jason,

Unfortunately for you, it's not possible to lookup and IP from a mac address, there is no way to resolve that type of thing. - Unless something has drastically changed and nobody told me :)

What you CAN do however, is register a dynamic dns name and link it to your internet account. This will allow you to have a domain name which you should be able to use on VNB. If VNC doesn't support dns name, you could simply ping the name and get the new ip, then put that into VNC each time you need to.

For an explanation of this method just read up on to www.dyndns.org. If you simnply want to dive in, it's really quite simple and explained step-by-step. First thing to do is create an account (http://www.dyndns.org/account/create.html) for free at dyndns.

If you need more help or have any questions, post here and I'll help out!
