I'm currently looking to buy a new labtop and found an ok one.

Compaq X6050 Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0GHz Laptop With HT Technology

I'm wondering if the compaq x6050 is better then an toshiba p-40. What I'm really wondering is is compaq a trust worthy brand?

Compaq (i believe) is an extension of HP, so it should be a good brand. Now about the Tosh question. I havn't seen the p40 model on their site, so I don't know, but that Compaq notebook looks to be a good desktop replacement (i personally don't think that anything can replace a desktop, but hey if you want a dual purpose computer, thats your choice). What are you planning to do with this laptop, if you don't mind me asking?

IMHO:

The are only three brands of Laptops to buy:

ACER

IBM

TOSHIBA

I would also only get something with a Centrino chip set. Less power consumption, longer battery life and built in wireless.

This (http://shopper.cnet.com/Acer_TravelMate_4502LMi_-_Pentium_M_725_16_GHz_-_15_TFT/4014-3121_9-31140029.html) is a really great buy. DVD-RW, 80 GB HDD, Windows XP Professional.

I have sold this model and it is a honey. I'm ordering one for myself ina few weeks... It's a sweet machine.

Actually, HP bought Compaq a few years back and the CEO is on the skids for doing it--oops, just checked the net--former CEO Carly Fiorina. Why former? She wanted to aquire Compaq, her board didn't, she won the battle, HP lost money. She's history.

I've never liked Compaq stuff all the way back to the days when they were "chic". But, that's another story.

I have to echo Classic's recommendations. And that particular Acer is very nice and a great deal. It would be very tough to match, much less beat.

there are many cheaper and better alternatives than compaq, realtively new companies in the laptop market are very good to buy from as generally there service is much better as they need to break into the market with that little biit extra. try this website, alot of variety available
