I've made a video with photo files and audio files. It plays well in the computer but when I burn it to play in the dvd player, I get an error msg.
I've burned photos onto cd and can play them in the dvd player, but the video won't. Do I need a special dvd video disc or cd video disc to do this? It's the same whether I use a cdr, cdrw, dvdrw.

I am new to this stuff, but I can say I tried to do the same thing. Figured out that I had to make a VCD with Nero. Which will encode it to play on your DVD player. You can't just copy a video file on to a CD or DVD, and play it on your DVD player. If you don't have Nero, I am sure other programs have the same option. The cool thing is you can make your own menus and backgrounds. The bad thing for me at least, is the image was a little distorted. Seemed like it was a little too big for the TV screen. I suppose the SVCD would be better quality, but since I have the OEM version of Nero, I would have to buy a plugin to do that, or buy Nero Ultra . Oh and I need a plugin to make a video on DVD as well.

Like I said, I have only been messing around with this kind of thing for a little while, so maybe someone else can clue us both in. ;)

So it's not just me :D I had exactly the same experience. I tried doing it on Nero but the preview was jerky and there were fade-ins left over the next photo, etc. Then again, I never got to the actual burn as I didn't like what I saw. Maybe I'll try a burn using Nero and see how it works out. It's only 50 cents after all.
Like you said, maybe someone else here can help us both.

Here's what you got to know. In order for a DVD player to play any kind of video the video needs to be in MPEG2 format or DVD VOB file format. A video cd is MPEG2 format, and yes Nero can convert your AVI files or MPEG1 files to Mpeg2 and format the CD in a way similiar to DVD providing you with menu options and so forth. But, I highly recomend finding another program for converting your video. I never had any luck with Nero and I had all the plugins. The video conversion is just not reliable. I recommend using virtualdub to extract the audio into a wave file, then you need TMPEG (Tsunami Mpeg Encoder) to convert your original vid file and the extracted audio into Mpeg2 format ready to be dropped onto a video cd.
Now if you wanna go DVD, that's a whole different ball game. Your vid must be converted to VOB files. TMPEG can handle this for you as well, again you wanna extract the audio first so that you are interleaving the video and audio helps keep them in sinc. TMPEG has settings for converting to VCD, SVCD, and DVD. Another good program that is really easy for converting and doesn't require audio extraction is WinAVI. Hope that helps there are a lot of sites out there on this stuff but not sure on the rules about linking. But post back if you ave further questions, been toying with this stuff for 3 years now. Good luck hope I can be of further assistance.

A video cd is MPEG2 format...
VCD is Mpeg-1.

Here (http://patmedia.net/dennisvogel) is a nicely detailed tutorial for creating DVD's.

I stand corrected, MPEG-1. Sorry been 2yrs or more since I made a VCD, it's about the DVD's now. If you have any questions here is the site for all the answers, like KVCD. VCD Help (http://www.videohelp.com)

Thanks Pentachris and Locobato. I just put in a DVD burner about a month ago, so I am not up to par yet. Although I will say DVD Shrink is really cool. ;)

Thanks for the links.

If you are referring to a "DVD Player" as a device connected to the television, then you need a specific DVD Player that can read and play certain media and their contents.

I want to thank all of you for your input. I waded thru those links  and probably the main thing I took away was that the video cd has to be in mpeg format. The one I burned using Windows Photo Story 3 looked good on computer but was obviously not mpeg. So I tried it on Nero and, you're right, it converted it to mpeg and clicking one extra button on my remote, I was able to play it on the dvd player just fine.
Thanks again....until my next problem (probably very soon)
