Can someone help me remove 2 Trojans please

I ran TDS this morning and it reports

Trojan.Win32.Krepper.k(dll) imbedded in the following file;

C:\windows\1042004.exe This file was a Microsoft system file, Install.exe but the trojan appears to have renamed it.

The other Trojan is reported by AVG as Trojan horse BackDoor.Agent.BA and is located in C:\SYSTEM32\ The file was called LOGLPEG.dll however I renamed it virus.xxx

Also ran Ad-ware, CW Shredder, Panda, Housecall, and Hijack and still infected.

Ad-ware reports me clean,as does CW, Spybot and Housecall. Panda does best and reports An adware incident in the registry, Virus Exploit in my temp file and in C:\Install.htm and Virus Tri/Sta... in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe and also finds the Adware Ad in C:\WINDOWS\1042004.exe. I will leave these virus's where they are until the experts have a chance to give advice.

I am running McAfee Personal Firewall, AVG and Ad-Aware every night now so hopefully no more will get in and have set the security level to the "Tight Level. It was on "trusting."

Tried previously to start in Safe mode , run a DOS window but could not change the file attributes of the trojan

I recommend also checking this, it is a registration reminder used by a number of companies and it is not needed... It is also thought to report back to the company that placed it and that leads to many suspecting it is spyware:

This is a rogue antispyware program as indicated HERE (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm) and I strongly suggest that you uninstall it...

Wow that was a quick response my sincere thanks Budfred.

I put a check against the 6 items as you said and fixed them in Hijackthis.

Tried to locate Spyware assassin however no sight of it. I did a search on *assassin*.* and nothing found.

I do not have PCTools so this is another un-needed line I suspect.

The computer is noticably faster so so far so good.

I also did another scan using panda and despite asking it only to scan it disenfected 3 events. 2) 3) 4)
1) Virus Exactsearch in the registry (Still there)
2) Virus Exploit in C:\Install.htm and
3) Virus Exploit in a temp file.
4) Virus StartpageSQ in my media player
5) Krepper in C:\WINDOWS\1042004.EXE (Still there)

I apologize... I forgot to put in the line for the Rogue program... It is this one:

So it is SpybKiller, not Spyware Assassin...

Also, I forgot to suggest fixing the O20... So please use HJT to fix:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\System32\loglpeg.dll

Then keep HJT open and select Config, Misc Tools and click on "Delete on reboot"... Copy/Paste this into the dialogue window, click through to set it up and close HJT, then reboot and post a fresh log:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\loglpeg.dll

If you haven't already tried to delete this, you might want to run this through that "Delete on reboot" tool as well...

This is odd... I haven't seen this before and I am not sure what it represents... It looks like you may have an unfinished process in HJT and you may need a reboot before you proceed.... It is especially odd because this is not where you have HJT... It might be a good idea to fix this one too if it is still there after a reboot:

I dealt with spykiller however it took 2 goes on HJT however it took 2 goes with a reboot

I managed to delete the 020 key referring to loglpeg.dll

I managed to deal with the 04 key referring to HijackThisstartup scan however this took 2 goes with a reboot

The file loglpeg.dll is still there and I cannot delete it as it is read only and nothing seems to work

Ran panda and it still reports 2 problems Exactsearch in the registry and kepper in C:\WINDOWS\1042004.exe

I feel I am making real progress and am nearly clean. PC running well

Use the link in my sig for HijackThis to download and use Killbox to remove this: loglpeg.dll.... Use the delete on reboot option... If that doesn't work, use the option to rename and delete...

Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower right hand corner and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review....

I copied the full scan however it is huge so please ask if you meant the entire document. It seems only to add what was OK. I have left these issues until you say fix them.. MwavScan seems even more effective than Panda, thanks.

I seem to have got rid of the 1042004 file using kill box. Could not find Killbox in your signature but used google.

To get rid of the loglpeg.dll file is a challenge. It is read only. I tried killbox with delete on reboot twice and it is still there. Also tried an immediate kill. Can you clarify what you mean by the option to rename and delete? Yes I can rename it but this does not change the read only status. Where is this option and what is the underlying logic?

I suspect we need to change the attributes. I tried this before joining the forum. Tried DOS but the bad file loads at boot so is untouchable. Tried a boot disc but I cannot see my C drive. Is there a way of loading DOS and being able to see the C drive.

If I use Task Manager could we spot it as a process and close it and then delete it?

Read somewhere if you place it on your Desktop you may be able then to change the attributes but the file would still remain behind in System32 or would it?

Once when I looked for loglpeg.dll it had renamed itself to loglpeg.dll.xxx.

Geez I hate this type of file...

Have you tried to remove it in Safe Mode? (referring to the loglpeg.dll file)

At times the only way I've been able to remove files like that one are by using a Linux based CD such as Damn Small (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/) or Feather (http://featherlinux.berlios.de/) Linux. A DOS boot disk won't work because your file system is NTFS, so DOS can't see or manipulate it. I think the Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) might have utilities that should work, but when I tried mine I couldn't get anything to do it, haven't tinkered with it enough. I booted into Feather Linux and it did the trick. I've had to do that 3 or 4 times on customers' machines with files that Windows simply would not remove, no matter what....

With these small versions of Linux the entire drive may be set read only by default, that's not hard to change, then the files can be renamed or deleted. DO NOT try and make any changes until you play with the OS a bit and learn how to use it, and remember you're not dealing with Windows. Things work different and you can make changes Windows won't allow (because the problem file is no longer loaded at start up, and the OS runs from CD) but finding your way around will probably be tedious and frustrating since it's a totally unfamiliar interface.

Safe Mode should be your first attempt, if you haven't tried it already, sometimes these critters can even lock you out in Safe Mode though...Use the F8 key during bootup to access a boot menu and get into Safe Mode, log into the Administrator account.

To rename or change file attributes:

Open Windows Explorer, right click on the file and click "Properties". Change attributes there, using the check boxes at bottom. remember to click "Apply".

To rename, right click and click "Rename".

when renaming files, I change the extension. filename.exe becomes filename.BAD so I know exactly what files I changed later if it won't boot right. That also eliminates any chance the file can run, since it's no longer an executable. You can also use your initials or "old" as the extension, just so you make sure it's unique and you can recognize it later.

1) The naff file is in a windows directory. If I reloaded windows would that replace the entire contents of the directory?

2) I also looked at Microsoft and they have a recovery Console. I think it is on the Programme CD. This seems to allow you to change attributes
and delete

Managed to zap loglpeg.dll after a long fight in safe mode. Kept dragging it to the recycle bin and trying all the combinations re attributes and finally took ownership.

I am not seeing CWS (or any other malware) in the log... Since MWavScan is not saying what it is seeing, we really don't have much to work with here... I would try running CWShredder again and try the MS Antispyware Beta too... Deleted DOH5KAIG.htm

Ran Coolweb Search and it was clean - falsely.

Downloaded CCleaner and ran this to regain 3GB of my hard disc!

downloaded MS Antispyware. Found CoolWeb Search keys in the registry and deleted them. You seem to need a legit copy of Windows

Also another problem with spyware in 5 browser keys. All problems were viruses embedded in Microsoft files which seems to be where they slink off to.

Was unable to copy the MS log for you. So I have run another HiJack this log so you can see what this MS programme does.

I just want to thank you Budfred and Paleo Pete so sincerely for your expert advice and it was so comforting to not have to step in the dark.

Your log looks clean still....

I will post my prevention speech, but also try to answer your specific questions about those programs... The most important thing is to update your programs so they have the latest definitions:

Spybot - I would run about twice a month or when I see something suspicious happening... I would also use TeaTimer...

Spyware Doctor - I would not use it...

SpywareBlaster - Install it, set protections and update it about once a week... It does not need to be run except to update it...

TDS3 - If you purchased it, use the resident protection and run it when you think you have a problem... If you have the trial version, you won't be able to use it soon....

CWShredder - When you think you have a problem...

HijackThis - When you know you have a problem and can't figure it out... Mainly use when you are going to post it for someone who knows how to read it to help...

AOL anti spyware - Use garlic and a stake through its heart...

AVG - Set for automatic updates and run it resident... Never go online without an active AV....

McAfee FireWall - Not my choice of firewalls, but if you are going to use it, it needs to be on whenever you are online...

Housecall - I assume you mean the online scan... Run it when you think you have a problem...

Killbox - Do not use unless asked to do so by a malware expert...

Panda - Again, I assume you mean the online version... run when you think you have a problem...

Ad-Aware SE - Same as Spybot...

MWavescan - Do not use unless asked to do so by a malware expert...

CCleaner - About once a week or whenever you want to speed up your system a bit...

If you run an updated AV, a firewall and some basic protection programs, you will avoid most problems... Using a browser other than IE will help... consider using FireFox... If you surf P2P or porn sites, all the protection in the world will not prevent infection in most cases...

Here is my prevention speech:

This is a good time to set up protection against further
attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a
good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads.
All of these have good free versions available... be very

Reading various posts I am trying to switch to Firefox however I am prevented. I get an error box saying my current security settings do not allow this?

What is going on?

I have set everything to low to try and download the file.

Is MS being naughty.

Is there a thread that shows how to replace the AOL spyware with a different one?

Sussed it! by using the dialogue boxes in Control panel under Internet options.

Downloaded Fire fox and need to try it.

Down loaded Spyblaster and have installed this. Have kept AVG also.

Downloaded Zone Alarm and it asked me to Uninstall McAfee's fire wall. Did this and ran ZA install. Looks a good programme and read the tutorial.

Rebooted and reconnected to the Internet and AOL reported that the firewall had been detected so it all went smoothly.

I will play with these programs for a while and report back in say 2 weeks.

Found a thread on how to configure Ad Aware SE and make a host of changes many of which were a mystery. Ran it and reported clean.

So many changes but I feel safer as a result of many hours of hard work. Thank you once more Budfred and Paleo Pete.

I am not sure that you can get rid of AOL's spyware service if you use AOL... I would use the other programs to back it up though... I have heard several reports lately about AOL spying on its users, so that is part of the reason that I would avoid them in general.... Their antispyware is provided by Aluria (last I heard) and they have been discredited in the antimalware community because they are partnered with a malware company....
