I recently just built a new computer
its a
AMD XP 1600+ @1400mhz(not OC'ED)
MSI K7t266 Pro With Recent Bios Updates 1.8
350 watt power suply
Evga Geforce2 MX 400
Soundblaster Live Value
Lucent Win Modem 56k
512mb Stick of 2100 kingston DDR Ram
20 gig maxtor ata 100
Windows Me (fresh Install)
The question i have is. I tried just about every microsoft OS in the book except 3.1 lol and 95
the problem is when i put a Os on My system here and update all the drivers it locks up especially with Win XP
as long as i run Win ME or Win 98 SE with old drivers it runs great and i mean with no flaws. but as soon as i update the drivers (ie)4 in 1 drivers my video card agp drivers sound card and mouse and keyboard. the comp locks up when i open icq or do mostly anything i dont understand it. which means XP is almost useless to me i cant even run it. i figured i build a new computer i can do whatever i want but im wrong something is messed up here. dont get me wrong it runs beautifull i just would like to have new drivers and such with my new computer..
i know one thing its not a heat problem it runs at a constant temp of 24 degrees celcius with a dragon orb 3 maybe a power problem i do run 1 slot fan 5 80mm fans and a fan on my video card also i run neon in it 2 super bright red leds and a wheat lamp inside my digital front thermometer that i built for it. now the neon isnt on all the time i usually have it off i only have it on to show off whats inside. maybe a power prob though. funny thing is when i first built this it did the same thing and that was with 2 fans . i really would love to run XP. i used to run it on my p3 500 with 368mb of ram fine no probs but as soon as i go AMD every thing is goofy hope i didnt stray too much i tend to do that and people get what i mean by it freezing maybe a simple solution to a simple problem but who knows
I think the problem is the drivers you are installing.
Under winXP you do not need to install all of the 4in1 driver set.
Only the driver Listed on the Via site as XP driver
The 4in1 install should detect the OS and only install the drivers needed.
Unfortunately it sounds like the install is adding all 4 drivers when only one is needed

i wonder which drivers should i be installing with the 4 in 1 drivers. see like i said when i update my drivers even on WINME my system locks i cant update my drivers on this too. is it those 4 in 1 drivers doing this ? Maybe You Are right maybe i just need the one driver from the 4 in 1 and i would be able to update the rest of my drivers ?

If your not sure what drivers you need Download the program Driver Detective v2.0. A FREE software program written by DriversHQ to help you find your current driver version and manufacturer. It's not becouse you installed AMD.Read all the documentation you can find, and do what it says. The vendor knows the best method for installing its drivers.Get the right version,Actually all the drivers you need should be on the XP CD ?

I believe there is some form of conflict because winXP is pretty touchy with drivers. I believe there is a test to check if your hardware or drive "qualifies" for win XP

nexis9, your right about xp being a little touchy at fist but looking at this persons specs that they posted pretty much tells you what they have is more than capable of handeling XP.

the thing is i download mainly the 4 in 1 and my video card drivers. when i do this on any opperating system it locks i even installed these in standard mode not turbo. it usually happens right when i put the most recent update for 4 in 1 and the most recent detonator driver on my pc. this is why i cant run xp. the drivers for that are pretty recent. now my old pc which ran the same stuff just about i could run all the drivers updated i didnt need the 4 in 1 drivers it was a pentium . my new pc runs great with old drivers. do i really need the 4 in 1 drivers? i never found a problem like this before. i dont get it i can run old drivers but as soon as i upgrade them my system hangs i just dont get it. maybe im doomed to run win ME or Win 98se. not that these are bad os's or anything i just thought i could run a new os with a new pc

If it is running fine with the drivers it has then do not upgrade the drivers "there is no need" aparently you have some other problem going on here. How do you have all this partitoned off? how much space are you allowing for each OS? you may be over the limit on space and have to do an overlay or go to a bigger HDD.

im not running multiple os'es. i dont have any partitions. im sorry if i go all over the place and made you misinterpet this.i run 1 os at a time. i like to test them to learn as much as possible about them. i found on my system it runs great with old drivers and WINME. but when i reformat and go to a ntfs and put WINXP it uses updated drivers. well with the updated drivers it hangs. meaning i cant run XP maybe i need a patch to run xp . now the same with WINME when i run the old drivers it runs fine but as soon as i update my drivers it hangs also. the thing of it is im trying to find out is why its doing this. maybe its a irq problem but then again maybe not cuz when i first started out i only had a video card in no modem or anything yes the mobo has onboard sound i disabled it in the bios maybe i missed something and need a jumper setting for that too im not sure... i have tried just about everything with this comp.

One more thing also its not so much as locking up but there is another post in here about flaky pixels. mine does the same thing when i update the drivers. is my geforce 2 mx 400 compliant meaning can i run that a agp 4 or not maybe its too old for this motherboard or something or its something im doing any ideas ????

Just a comment, I think the suggestion nexis made about whether the hardware "qualifies" for XP was referring to hardware compatibility, not system requirements. Even if the hardware is capable of handling the OS, some of it might not cooperate well with XP, same as with NT, it's predecessor. Some components would not work with NT, some would but were flaky at best. MS published a hardware compatibility list for NT and later win2000, I'm not sure but they may have one for XP as well.

Well YODA I had this experience whereby XP installed all my drivers but not the softwares. When I wanted to install using my driver CD with all the software then thats where hell freezes over. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif OUCH! In this occassion I was trying to install my Mobo VIA drivers, Creative Live driver, creative Utlra TNT2d driver, etc which I normally do so with Win98SE.

well its update time
i put xp in. installed all drivers and so far (knock on wood) no problems the Os is running even smoother than WINME now all i got to do is get the refresh rate fix so i can play my counterstrike. i think all my probs were some settings in the bios. i was reading up on my motherboard and it says sometimes if you run the high performance settings it will lock up i loaded the defaults this time and manually set everything the way it should be and its running fine. if anyone got a refresh fix for the newest nvidia drivers please i need them. thanks for all your help
