I am running a PIII 1ghz with 128MB 133mhz SD RAM, dual booting XP Pro with Win Me.Yesterday I have added an extra stick of 256 MB in one of the two vacant slots. The Additional memory is not recognised in full POST,
Bios, system information, sisoft sandra and also in Norton Utilities system information. All of them show the amount of installed physical memory as 128MB.Curiously, I feel an improved performance, which may be imaginary.
The machine being a compaq presario, do i need to install only compaq memory?

shanmuga, try putting the bigger stick of memory in the first slot and the 128 next to it. see if that helps. if not post back.

Make sure you put the memory in the correct slot. Most slots are numbered, generaly starting off with bank 0, then followed by bank 1, bank 2, etc. I don't believe the extra stick would register, if installed in bank 2 with bank 1 skipped.

Tried booting with 256MB stick, no avail.

Hi,
I took the problematic stick to the shop, it worked perfectly in front of my eyes!, in their system.
I have purchased another stick of 128MB SD RAM and tried it in my system,it was recognised in full POST and working perfectly.I think some description is in order here,
My system has three memory slots, the maximum installable memory is 768MB and the maximum installable memory is a slot is 256MB.
My original system came installed with 128Mb RAM.
My question is:
Do I have to install the memory equally in the available slots?
i.e. 128/128/128 or 256/256/256
Thanks in advance.

Check the Spec’s on your mother board for memory.
You may have one of the systems that will not allowing Double sided Memory .
You should be able to mix IF you match the new memory to the same spec’s as the old 128
