I have a Dell Latitude CPIA. Last night, I tried shutdowing laptop. It froze, so I turned it off manually. Today, I turned it on. When the windows 98 screen comes up, the laptop automatically turns off. I want to know what is the problem and how I can fix it. If there is no solution, can some tell me how to install my zip drive through dos. I really dont want to lose my files! :-( Please help, I'll appreaciate it. Thanks!
Try booting into Safe mode...if Windows boots into safe mode then it a config problem or a battery problem.

It doesn't load up in safe mode. When I get into dos, and I type in Win, the screen shows some weird characters, and then the computer turns off. If I upgrade, let's say to XP or to Win2000, would I be able to fix this problem without losing my data?
How are you getting into DOS?
List your boot sequence....
Usually when a laptop shuts down right after Windows starts there is a problem with power: the battery is not holding a charge, power management settings or something similar. Another reason could be a hard disk problem. Neither of those would be cured by an upgrade...

I fixed it!!!! I just run the recover windows program from the cd that came with my laptop. I guess my windows files were corrupted. Anyways, its up and running!
