dvd/cd drive problem

I can get into more detail about the specifications of my computer, if needed, but I pieced my computer together about 5 months ago, so its relatively new. I've never had any problems with it until now. My cd/dvd drive reads cds fine, burns then fine, etc. However... when I tried to watch a dvd on my computer, it will get about 15 minutes into the movie and then freeze whatever program i am using (i've tried 4 of them, so its not the program) and will pop up an error message and close the program. If will do this throughout an entire movie in certain spots. I know it CAN read dvds, because i installed a game using a dvd. So i'm not sure what is wrong.
