View Full Version : Which AV would you use?

Hello all ;) I’m wondering what the general consensus is today as far as favored anti-virus. For several years now we all highly recommended AVG and I have sung it’s praises to MANY friends and associates. In a recent thread here (can’t remember which one) someone suggested that AVG is no longer the superpower in anti-virus it once was. I have not had any grief with it but would like to know what the security pros here think. If you had to choose only one AV, what would it be?
Thanks

For a free av, I choose Avast! all the way. Not only does it have a few extra features, like automatic on access scanning of web, P2P, instant messaging, network, e-mail, but it's auto updating is virtually flawless, requiring no scheduled task.
AVG is still a good anti-virus, and I had never had problems until a while back I started having video problems. Thought it was drivers. Tried installing new drivers, and they wouldn't take, could not install them. Then thought it was hardware. After a lot of hardware changing and swapping, I realized that wasn't it.
I then removed AVG and problem went away. May have been a misconfiguration, maybe not. Have used Avast! ever since, no worries, no looking back.
If considering a paid for av, I might look elsewhere, but as far as free avs go, Avast! is my choice.

I still use AVG and install it, or at least recommend it, on the PCs I work on. About the only problem I've had with it is updating problems. That turned out to be because the "AVG free" update server was overloaded. I changed my hosts file to redirect it to their pay server and updates are really fast and reliable now. :D
I installed AVAST on the son's PC, maybe two years ago. I didn't like the interface but that was about it. To be honest, I never gave it a chance.
For pay versions, I liked NOD32 but never bought it (trialed it) for a couple of reasons. The most bothersome was false positives (virus detections) that were triggered whenever I did a scan with TrojanHunter.
I heard good things about Kapersky and actaully downloaded it. Before I installed it though, I was doing some digging in various forums to see what might be the praises or gripes. At the time, there were tons of gripes about KAV fragging the heck out of XP systems. I never installed it for the trial run and don't know what the outcome was.
Norton? Forget it. Updates well, though.
My vote goes with AVG. It's not pretty, maybe it doesn't have every feature (I don't us IM or P2P), but it has been reliable and that means allot to an old stick in the mud like me.

I'm with pop pop on this one. AVG may not be as fancy as some others, and may not have all the features( bugs?) of the bloatwares, but it works, it is updated, and its free! What more do you want?

Sounds good so far ;) I have not had any real problems with AVG updating other then one time and I think that may have been due to server load. I do have one machine that keeps loosing the e-mail scanner and sometimes after going through the up-date motions it comes back, other times after a reboot
I use MS Messenger, but only with my dad and brother so no real worries there, unless someone can pick up on our conversation and hijack us from there.
Thanks

100% Avast for me - trouble free for over a year now.

I use NOD32, but I haven't tried to use TrojanHunter for a long time, so I haven't had any problems with it... It updates frequently and it is extra-lean compared to Norton...
For free programs, I think either AVG or Avast is okay...

I have a variety of AV programs on 5 PCs:
NAV
Avast!
Trend Micro
I have the Avast on the stepdaughter's PC and that is an acid test, she is awful on security updates and has not been infected since Avast was loaded, so I know it is pretty good. (she clicks on everything).

I switched to Avast about 3 months ago (and advised a couple of freinds to do so as well) as when AVG 7 first came out there were probs getting it to update (on other computers as well)
I now prefer Avast for the reasons previously stated, but still recommend AVG to folks that have almost no knowledge of computer security because it is so easy to use.
