Might I suggest that while Budfred can spot a malware gnat at a hundred yards without a scope, some of these guys might like to know if you're having any symptoms. That might help, just a wee bit.

By your description of symptoms, I'm sure something is going on that shouldn't be.
'xblhqo.exe' in your log is not recognized in Google at all. This can suggest a morphed version of some malware.
'msmsgs.exe' is a windows process when run from a specific folder. If it is run from another location it is considered spyware. See here (http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/msmsgs.exe.html). It appears that your's is spyware.
But as usual, please wait for the spyware 'sharpshooters' ;) to reply as I have not done an in depth look-see into your log and possibly I am in err also.

I just moved this to Applications and Security so the HJT readers can find it easier.

This is a brand new infection. I would prefer we wait for Master Budfred for this one. There are several fixes floating about on other forums. Let's wait for Budfred to advise us.
Hang tight till he looks at it. If he does not stop by later tonght, I'll take a whack at it in the morning.

This is indeed a new and nasty infection... The clean up is not entirely clear yet, but we can start with some basics... Please open an HJT scan and put checks by:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: BolgerObj Class - {302A3240-4805-4a34-97D7-1645A0B08410} - C:\WINDOWS\Bolger.dll
O2 - BHO: ohb - {999A06FF-10EF-4A29-8640-69E99882C26B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsx69.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fibibfp] c:\windows\system32\xblhqo.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
Then close all open windows except HJT and click Fix checked...
Find and delete these files:
c:\windows\system32\xblhqo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
If you can't delete either of them, open HJT again, choose Config, Misc Tools and select "Delete on reboot"... Copy/paste the whole path into the dialogue window that opens and click through to close HJT and reboot...
Download and run MWavScan... It will produce a very large log, but the bad files are at the bottom of that log... Please highlight those items, use Ctrl-C to copy them and then paste them into a post here... Also reboot and run an HJT scan and post that log here too...

Go back again and make sure you delete NAIL.EXE and not NAILS.EXE.
DO NOT RE-boot
Load hjt and fix:
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kmajdf] c:\windows\system32\eccclq.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
Then re-boot and post another log. This has worked according to other sites, though this the first time we have seen it here.

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
This entry seems to be what is restarting the nail.exe process.
I would suggest before fixing anything in HijackThis, to go to the run command and type services.msc.
In the services window that opens, scroll to System Startup Service, right click it and choose disable in the dropdown box. Then hit the Stop button.
Edit_ also when in HJT, you can go to the "config" button, choose "Misc Tools", and click on "Delete an NT Service". Type in SvcProc and hit OK.
Now follow the gurus HJT fix advice. This process needs to be stopped before fixing anything.

Nail.exe is gone.
fix the new Random entry and re-boot into safe mode.
Try the fix in safe mode and delete the new Random file as well.
Also Internet Explorer should be closed when these fixes are applied.

I apologize..... It was late and I forgot to post the link to MWavScan:
As I said it will produce a log in the lower right hand corner... Scroll down to the part with bad files and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review....
http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp
The other fixes seem to be on the way to killing this think... We can see if any more parts show up in the scan...

We can try to kill this another way... Download the latest version of KillBox from the link in my signature for HJT and use it to copy/paste these items into the dialogue box that it opens... Apparently the new version will allow you do past the whole block at one time, but you will still need to confirm each one... Go for the "delete on reboot" option...
c:\windows\system32\wvobdmu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\hliytirdjmo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\htstgki.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nse37.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsk43.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsl49.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nso4F.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nss3D.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsx69.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rtneg.dll
Download and run CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) to clear Temp files, especically for:
C:\DOCUME~1\Default\LOCALS~1\TEMPOR~1\Content.IE5\
Make sure the C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe is turned off in services.msc before you reboot and then run a fresh MWavScan... If any of the files remain, use the rename function in KillBox to try to kill them...
After a reboot, run HJT and get a fresh log, then run MWavScan for a fresh log and post both...

I'm sorry to intrude on the operation here. Sometime after this is fixed, could one of you explain just what this thing is? And maybe where it comes from--e.g., a company as opposed to a hacker?
Thanks. Sorry for the distraction.

Budfred, i did everything you suggested and it seems that there are new infections or are they just renaming themselves.hopefully none of the others will return like before.what should i so to remove what is left? Usually when i try to delete that random entry it just comes back as a different name. anyway here are the two logfiles. thanks in advance>

another mwavscan also confirms that the infections are back. what is this svcproc?could it be causing all this and why is it coming back when sometimes it seems to be gone. It only seems to be gone when i delete it,take another hjt scan and it doesnt show up. But if i take another scan a little while later ,its back.

An Expert just post an experimental fix for this thing... It is new and a real pain... Here is the fix:
Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:
@ECHO OFF
cd\windows
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
exit
Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
There will also be an item towards the bottom of the O4 section in HijackThis (it should be the last O4 item marked "HKLM", and it should be between the entries for QuickTime Task and ctfmon.exe). This item will be marked with "garbage" random characters. However, it seems to be renaming itself so the name will most likely be different by the time you follow these directions. In your previous log it was:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nyazcfz] c:\windows\system32\pntelwe.exe
Whatever the name of the item is, check it. Then close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.
Then delete the file listed in the random O4 entry. In the above example you would delete c:\windows\system32\pntelwe.exe.
Restart your computer and please post a new HijackThis log.
Try this and post a fresh MWavScan too....

Did you follow the instructions carefully all the way through... If you did and you still have that file, the infection is probably going to be back... Try this... Download and run the Ewido trojan scan, let it fix what it finds:
http://www.ewido.net/en/
Post details about how it went and any log info it gives you... Also, post a fresh HJT log after reboot...

Please answer my questions and provide details about how things went... It is hard for me to know how to proceed without details....
Since the other files seem to be gone, did you try to delete Nail.exe again?? If not, please do so... Also please say if you have run all or just some of the instructions up to this point... Then post a fresh HJT log and MWavScan log...

i created notepad file and copied the entries budfred instructed and named remove.bat. Rebooted in safe mode, ran remove.bat, and then ran hjt and fixed svproc, random entry at 04 and nail.exe. all were gone except the random entry at 04 and nail.exe.
now i downloaded ewido and ran that.It detected infections and deleted them.(not sure exact names) but all seems clean except for nail.exe. I tried to delete this file by using killbox-standard delete and also delete on reboot but no success.i also tried to delete the file by just right click/delete and it seems to be gone but when i reopen windows explorer its right back in windows.
Budfred, ive done everything that has been suggested in this post. You seem to be getting closer as the only thing left is nail.exe. I hope this has helped you in what steps i have taken.Should i retry any of the steps or something new?? Anyway here is the new logfile.

Please tell us what your file system is.
If you have FAT32, you can boot with a Windows boot disk and therefore nothing from Windows will load and you should be able to delete nail.exe that way.
Please advise

file system is ntfs. but heres something strange.nail.exe is not in the windows directory where it always was.It actually seems as if it is gone but it still shows up when i run hjt. About 2 hours ago I select nail .exe in hjt and click fix checked,it was gone.I went to windows directory and deleted nail.exe, and it was gone. Even after a few scans with hjt ,it appeared gone. But,i left my computer for about 2 hours, did a scan and its back in the logfile. But its still not in the windows directory.
Just did a search for nail.exe and it was in windows/prefetch. Would this cause the haedaches even though the main file from c:/windows was deleted??? Not Sure if all is ok now but here is a hjt log. by the way can anyone shed some light on what those results from my previous mwav scan mean???

It looks like the main infection is dead, but just in case, here is an experimental fix for this nasty:
Print (not copy) this post out, you will need it.
Download RemoveNail.zip from here:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.ph...=post&id=143600
To your desktop, extract both files inside (Runme2.bat and runonce-ex.reg) to
the C:\hijackthis folder, double click the runonce-ex.reg file and answer yes to the prompt.Post any log and comments back here...
The MWavScan is also looking pretty clean, but suggests that you have some orphaned fragments of a couple of infections in your system... I am not sure how we could track them down, but apparently they are harmless....
Edit: I just checked and that link is dead... I will have to get back to you later with another option... Check after a few reboots to see if that Nail.exe or any of the other garbage has returned... If it hasn't, we may be done...

Hopefully this thing is gone.If it returns, ill let you know

Just in case it doesn't return... Here is my prevention speech...
This is a good time to set up protection against further
attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a
good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads.
All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in
popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....

Budfred the link to that remove nail zip im just getting HTTP404 file not found. Is there another way to get it?
Budfred
04-22-2005, 08:54 PM
I added an edit about that... Must have been too late for you to see it...
If that file reappears, let me know and I will look for the next fix... I am guessing that one may have been withdrawn because it wasn't working... :(

Budfred, this morning when i started up my computer, ewido started up and said infected file found-nail.exe. So it cleaned it and then i searched to see if there were any traces of nail and there wasn't. maybe my final step in removal included a reboot. Not sure, what do you think??? Or is this file destined to live on??
Budfred
04-23-2005, 05:03 PM
I have heard that it works best to run Ewido in Safe Mode and then run the fix I posted earlier to kill this thing... You may not need to do all of that again, but I would probably at least try Ewido in Safe Mode and see if that keeps that Nail.exe from coming back...
To answer an earlier question... This thing seems to be the latest from the same happy slimemolds who brought us Vx2... The Transponder gang... We are also expecting a new version of Vx2 any day now since we have a fix for the last one... Each one gets nastier and harder to kill so prevention is extremely important....

Recently my computer was also infested similarly. I tried Adaware. Spybot, Bazookascan and many others. I was able to remove almost all infestations except this "callinghome...thnall2c.exe". Secretmaker prohibits(?) this from installing but on every internet connection it pops up. All the above anyi-spyware programs assure that my machine is clean. HJT log is too cumbersome but from your dicussions it seems that has to be some way to handle this pest rather than posting HJT logs. Can anyone help me?

nitin62,
Hello and welcome to PCGuide...
Start your own thread in this subforum to address your problem... As you can see from this thread, we will need to see a HijackThis log to help you...
To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.
