Hi gang.

I have been having some very bad luck trying to get my Firefox settings from one PC to take effect on a different PC. I have followed all the directions according to Firefox's website entitled "Backing Up Your Profile" and "Move an Existing profile or restore a backed up profile" but it does not seem to be working right.

I am still confused if I should be transferring only the Profiles folder and then editing the profiles.ini file already present on the second computer (created by installing Firefox) or if I should copy the entire Profiles folder, the profiles.ini file, and/or the pluginreg.dat file.

If anyone else has ever been able to migrate from one machine to another successfully with Firefox (both PCs running XP Home), I would love to hear how you did it. Doing the same process with Mozilla Thunderbird was a breeze, though (took exactly 49 seconds).

One thing that I should mention as well: On the original PC, the Firefox version is 1.0.3 and on the destination PC it is still running Firefox 1.0. this couldn't be causing the problems, could it? If so, I can upgrade the second computer's version if need be, but I'd still like to know exactly which files and folders should be copied over to the destination PC.

Thanks in advance for any help...:D

Edit: i have updated the version of Firefox on the destination computer to 1.0.3 and am still experiencing major difficulties.

I haven't done what you are trying to do. I think the first thing you would want is for both versions to be 1.03 and installed in the default directories or at least the exact same ones. Now... go here (http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/) and download Mozbackup. It's a utility for backing up and restoring Mozilla/FireFox profiles. That might get the job done. Let me know cuz I may need to do something similar with my new build.

Thanks pop pop, I'll give that a try and let you klnow how it works out. As far as putting them in the exact same directory, that seems to be another problem. Every time I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox to make the migration work, it apparently creates a new folder in the formst xxxxxxxx.default and it is renamed each time I try to change the profiles.ini file. (Somehow I figured this would be easier to do with Firefox than with IE but I was mistaken)...

At any rate, I have updated the target PC's Firefox, like I said, so they are now both running the latest version. Now I'm going to try that tool. I just looked up that web domain you gave me, and there's not too much info to be found about it. Hopefully it won't install a bunch of spyware on my system, too...:D

Wish me luck!

pop pop. I believe I owe you a case of beer, my friend! That worked perfectly! It also made a difference that I had Firefox 1.0.3 on the destination machine. I tried it again for the heck of it using V1.0 on the target machine (still using 1.0.3 on the source machine) and no dice!

Lesson learned: both machines have to be running the same version for the profile folder to correctly transfer.

Also, someone should post the link you gave to a sticky thread... That's one heckuva handy tool to have!

Thanks again...:D :D :D

Glad it worked for the transfer. I have had Mozbackup for awhile but never used it to move a profile from one machine to another, so that's good to know.

As for the case of beer, I don't partake but go ahead and have one on me. ;)
