This is a follow on from my message below.......
I was chuffed to bits when as below I managed to get the two ethernet cards installed properly. Then I manage to surf the web on my client pc,when I restart it I lose the server! messing about for too many precious minutes(family man, wife on the war path) trying this and that, the client is telling me it's connected but I can't reach the server arghhhh!
I had a look on my Sygate firewall (Host pc) and couldn't find anything that looked like my client path,so I decided to disable the windows firewall......hurray.
Now the client connects immediatley, hassle over ,networking here I come.
Think I read somewhere that only the Host pc needs a firewall, lets hope so.

This is basicly correct Gary. If the client is sharing a connection from a host, and the host is protected by a firewall, everything below it is protected, in theory. I would recommend you download and install one of the free firewalls regularly recommended here. ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=dbtopnav_za) is what I use and has been highly recommended here for years. They have a pay version and a free version. The free version is enough for any home user ;) I would install this on both machines and be sure to check zone settings so that each machine allows the other.

Good luck

Thanks for the info Bassman, the Sygate firewall already protecting this the host pc has done it's job without complaint for as long back as I can remember so I will give the zonelabs a miss, thanks anyway.
