When I go into Device manager I have a question mark in front of other devices. The exclamation point is in front of ESS AllegroX MPU-401 Compatable and the other exclamation piont is in front of OEI USB Link Port Driver. System information is telling me that these 2 drivers are not installed
Code-28..... I just reformatted my Compaq Presario 2 days ago and it keeps freezing up and pages won't load correctly. Please Help...

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.

What made you re-format? What kind of problems were you having?

What is the model of your compaq?

Did you use the restore discs provided by Compaq?

Is all of this the original equipment or did you add anything later?

I was getting an error at startup that said (Unable to locate Wnnet) so I tried a Windows 98 fix. When I would get to the part that had to type in (set up) it would say (bad command) or (syntek error). Not sure how to spell all that. So we just reformatted it. Now the problems are, when I start up PC
It won't load. I have to restart it at least 3 times. It just freezes up. It keeps looking for unknown devices. Also windows update can't update a driver.
My model is Compaq Presario 7360.
Yes I used my Compaq Startup Discs.
I added a CD Burner 2 years ago, A new Network PCI card last year, A harddrive 4 years ago. Anew modem 4 years ago. New monitor last year and new printer last year. I think thats it.
I think it's ready for the garbage. lol

This is what I would do.

1) Remove the new modem and NIC. These are probably, but not definitely the problem.

2) Make sure you download or have the drivers for these 2 devices on floppy or CD ROM.

3) use the re-install discs and restore to factory specs.

4) Create a folder on your hard drive called drivers and a subfolder for the modem and the NIC. Put the drivers in their proper folders.

5) Install the modem and NIC. One at a time of course. When asked for the drivers, point them to the proper folder on the hard drive. If it asks for Windows folders, they should be in the Windows\Options\Cabs folder.

Where do I get the drivers for the 2 Devices? This happened to me before. Verizon sent me a link and when I clicked on it, it automatically fixed this problem. I don't have a clue as to what the link was.

You added the devices so you should have the drivers or boxes or something from them so you can either suppyk the drivers or at leat identify them

Let's never mind the drivers for network cards and such, and first see what is the issue with the freezups you mentioned. It may be the root of the problems.

It won't load. I have to restart it at least 3 times. It just freezes up.

Heat?
RAM?
PSU?
Malware?

Similar to unwarranted reboots IMO. Pull the cards if you like, at least for now, for a first test at least.
