Hello Folks, Hope I am in the proper forum. Recently did a clean install on a Me and it is working great except that I have a yellow question mark in device manager > Other devices > PCI Serial controller. I need the serial port and of course its not working. Can someone help me out? Thanks

" went to control panel \ system \ device manager, Selected the PCI
serial controler found under other devices, then selected update
driver - pointed it at the driver and It worked.....
it turns out that the PCI serial controller is actually the modem Enumerator"

MORE INFORMATION
The PCI serial controller is a communications port controller that is built into the modem. This type of modem does not communicate through a serial port on the motherboard.
SYMPTOMS
After you install Windows 98, your Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) modem may not be recognized. When this occurs, the PCI modem may be listed as a PCI Serial Controller under Other Devices in Device Manager.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because the Windows 98 CD-ROM does not include drivers for PCI serial controllers.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, update the driver for the device:
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Device Manager tab.
Double-click the Other Devices branch to expand it, click PCI Serial Controller, and then click Properties.
Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
Click Next, click Search for a better driver then the one your device is using now (Recommended), and then click Next.
Insert the driver disk or CD-ROM that was included with your modem.
Click to select the check box for the drive corresponding to the media type (floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive), and then click Next.
If you receive an Update Driver Warning dialog box, click Yes.
Click Next, click Finish, and then click Yes to restart your computer.

Thanks so much for the reply. I was able to re-install the modem driver. it was actually installed as modem enumerator but still have the exclamation mark on PCI Serial Controller even after a couple of boots. Is there anything else I could try? Thanks

If your modem is listed in Device Manager and it works ok, then just remove the 'PCI Serial Controller' from Dev. Mgr.

If the modem is not listed in DM and it does not work, then uninstall and reinstall its driver.

If no luck, then you may not be using the correct driver.
