Autonumbering in Word, can it be done?

I am working on creating a template in MS Word 2000. My boss would like to place this template on a server for various people to access and fill out. She wanted to know if the form can assign a new Number (in sequential order) every time a new user opens the form. Can anyone tell me if this can be done in Word or even Excel? Thank you!

I would suggest using MS Access and create a form on the database. This software can definitely update numbers sequentially. The main criteria for deciding if this is OK though may be determined by your need to keep a copy of the form once it is completed, eg for a Change Control system, Invoice creation system, etc. If you have MS Office you should have Access available, and it is easy to use.
