First, my thanks for my related network post...

I have a LaserJet5 that has been attached to the old Win98 PC. I *could* attach it to the new WinXP Pro PC but then I'd have to have the WinXP Pro PC on to print to the LaserJet5 from any PC on the network. The LJ5 has an old, old JetDirect card (it even has a BNC and LocalTalk connectors in addition to the 10Base-T connector). I cannot identify which JetDirect model it is...

I logged onto my router looked at my attached devices. Then, I disconnected the parallel cable on the LJ5, plugged in a Cat5e patch cable and turned on the LJ5. I refreshed my router listing, and I don't see the LJ5. I can't figure out if the JetDirect card doesn't work or if I have to activate it somehow.

Any suggestions?

The cheapest and fastest thing to do is to buy an inxepensive print server. Try for the same make as your router. In 10 minutes you will be up and running....

... that would be Netgear.

More out of curiosity, is it hard to do it otherwise?

Never done it, but it would be more difficult to troubleshoot and take more time than getting the print server, which is as much more elegant solution. Time is money and I always go with the quicker way.

I don't exactly know if this would work, but have you tried reconnecting the printer to the win 98 machine, then sharing the printer in the printers folder from the Win98 machine. Then add a printer in the Folder on the XP, but search over the network onto the 98 machine for that printer and get the drivers from there. It works for Windows 2000 and XP but I haven't used Windows 98 for quite some time, so I don't know if this will work.

To get the Jetdirect to work
It must be setup and requires software from HP to do that.

I have the model HP170 and it is not seen by anything on the network untill configured

If you remove the jetdirect card from the LJ5 you may be able to get the required software.
However it may be an old token ring card and will never work with your new network
