can someone explain to me why i was able to install xp and change the "key" with any type of key changer available for free, and now i can`t get the darn key to change after formatting? i tried also the regedit way but it`s not changing. Anything in the bios that prevents the change maybe?
if you are willing to help, thank you, if you don`t for ethical issues i respect your view, but please spare me the rethoric sermon, i appreciate!
thank you

If you use a "leaked" product key (a product key that is known to be available to the general public) for the deployment of Microsoft Windows XP across multiple computers (a Volume Licensing installation), you may not be able to install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or automatically obtain updates from the Windows Update Web site.
Whatever.
The M$ info sounds like a fix for situation where a business somehow used a known GP individual key on a machine where they should have used their legit volume key. That hardly sounds like what was being attempted here. Or if it was, it was not made clear. In any case, going to M$ would be an appropriate solution for a problem where a bad key was inadvertently used.
Thanks

Andrea,
Seans link is a good explanation of your situation. Many OEM's use a volume license cd to install XP. They are expected to then change the product key to the individual key on the cd that is being sent with the computer. Often times, in order to save time and therefore money, OEM's skip this step. I think you might have a computer that falls into this category. Once you formated and reinstalled, using the product key on your cd, you lost the ability to change the key that the volume license offers.
