I just installed a ATi Radeon 7000 video card out of my old PC it worked great in old system but not so good in new one. Whenever I plug my monitor into the new card I get a black screen with a few colored pixels but not what it's supposed to be. So I tried going back to my integrated video card but now in order to get to my icons I have to have another monitor plugged into my new video card. I've tried disabling the new card and that didn't seem to help. So my question is this: How do I either 1. Use just one monitor and my new video card or 2. use one monitor with my integrated video card? Having two monitors isn't what bothers me it's the fact that one is 17" and the other is 15" and it's messing with my head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just messed with MY head, dude!

Let me see if I got this...

You put a graphics card in a machine with integrated graphics. You hooked up your ... a ... monititor to the graphics card. You turned the machine on and got a black screen. You then simultaneously hooked up another monitor, of a different size, to the integrated video connector and now you have ... something  on at least one, maybe both monitors???? Dueling monitors. Toooo freakin' wierd.

Go back to square one ... remove the card, undo any jumpering if you did any, hook the original monitor up to the integrated graphics adapter, reboot and make sure all your settings are the same as they were before.

Post back and let us know how it looks. Then let us know just what you're really trying to do ... cuz I sure don't understand.

Did you uninstall the drivers/software for the onboard video before you hooked up your Radeon? If not, having drivers/software for two video cards at the same time would definitely cause problems. If you didn't take this step, do as pop pop said and start from scratch.

Ok back to my original setup. What happened is this I upgraded my computer about a year ago and I just got around to stripping my old computer of any useful upgrades I installed on it. One of which is a ATi Radeon 7000 PCI video card. Upon installation of the card into my new system I had some interesting problems. The first of which was I had my desktop and all my icons but no start menu ( Windows XP) after restarting and making sure that my new vidoe card was the one being used when my PC started I had a start menu and no icons. Yes I did install all the drivers for the new device and even updated the drivers. After an angry spell where I threw some stuff ( mostly stuff I didn't need) I figured I'd try hooking up an additional monitor to see if maybe that was the problem. Two things led me to do this the first was my mouse cursor would move to the left of the screen and not stop and second I saw the same setup on my mother's work computer done with 3 monitors. Now what I want to do is install the Radeon PCI video card and get it to run on one monitor only I have no idea why it only works with two my old system used it just fine and only had one monitor and I never experienced this problem with it.

Kinda long winded huh?

Not really, you should see some of our rants when we get into a subject we feel strongly about...And I'm not excluding myself, I've posted my share of long winded diatribes too...

OK, as mentioned above, back up and start over. Get the machine back to its original state with onboard graphics and everything working.

Give us some system specifics, mostly make and model, CPU, RAM, OS. I think yo ualready said XP, never mind about the OS.

If this is a branded computer such as Compaq or HP, disabling the onboard video may be difficult to impossible, depending on how well they stripped their BIOS. But, that's where your problem is, the onboard video must be disabled or Windows will see it as a dual monitor setup.

If disabling onboard video through BIOS or otherboard jumper (unlikely these days) is not possible, then it may be possible to disable that graphics adapter in Device Manager and get it to work right with the other one.

First thing though, is to get it back to ormal working condition so we can screw it up again. :D Ok we won't do that, we're good, but we do need it back to its original state if possible to be able to do things right...

I'll echo Pete's thought that you have inadvertently set up a dual monitor situation with your pc.

Easiest way to tell is to go into Display Settings through Control Panel. If it is set up for ual monitors you'll see two screens on that page.

but to return to square one, I'd make sure I have the onboard drivers handy, remove all the display adapter drivers from Device Manager, then reboot with a monitor on the built in connector and no pci graphics card attached. Then install the onboard drivers if that is what you will want it to remain as. If not, then find a way (BIOS or other) to disable the onboard prior to installing the pci card.

System: Compaq Presario
CPU: Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
Ram: 256MB DDR
HDD: 130GB (upgraded from 30GB)

I had no problems installing this hardware on my old system but then again my old system was a dinosaur!!! :D ( IBM Pentium 2 350Mhz)

My system is back the way it was before I installed the new hardware, I even had to remove the sound card I put in. It worked great until I tried to use the microphone!!!!! go figure!! :D
