Hey, i have a dell and just bought a new video card in it and by boyfriend installed the drivers for it before disabling the on-board video, and everything in the comp. will run but nothing will show up on the monitor can anyone tell me what could have happened to either of the video's and/or how to fix it.

Thanx,

You should be able to boot into safe mode and uninstall the drivers.

Just tape the f8 key as soon as the first windows screen appears. Depending on the OS, you should have s choice. Choose safe mode or VGA mode in XP or 2000 and uninstall the video drivers.

If you are succesfull, installation will go like this.

1) Copy driver files to hard drive
2) Install the video card
3) Boot system with monitor connected to new vid card and then disable on board video.

Take out the vid card, plug the moniter into the onboard, remove it from system devices (in OS), shut down, plug in vid card, install drivers.

The above might work, but I've found that with XP sometimes it's simplest to boot into Safe Mode and disable the one you don't want in Device Manager. But if you can get into Safe Mode you can get it done right to begin with...

You have a couple of settings to look at, the Device Manager settings will disable either, if you have video at all, and usually the onboard graphics need to be disabled in BIOS before installing a secondary card.

Also, before freaking out it's usually a good idea to plug the monitor into the onboard video and see, you may still have video there, since it will most likely be set as primary in both BIOS and Windows...if so, first go into Windows (Safe Mode preferably) and in Device Manager uninstall the onboard video completely, then reboot, go into BIOS and disable the onboard adapter there. Reboot and it should find the add-on card and install it, you may even be able to leave the new card plugged in but I prefer to physically remove it and get things working again then add the new card.
