Hi

After several months of spyware/adware free computing, I have suddenly had my homepage hijacked and am getting LOTS of pop up ads appearing. I have run spybot S & D and ad-aware SE personal. SPybot is coming up with startpage-EH, coolWWWsearch.aff.winshow and URLsearchhookz.atlpz repeatedly. Adaware is finding VX2. I have tried deleting/removing these through these programs but after restart they are back.

Any advice on getting rid of them would be MUCH appreciated!

Until the gurus come along to read your log go to the following link and download cwshredder and run it. You just need to download it into a folder on your desktop and run from there. When you open it select fix, after that make another HJT log and post it once again.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

There is also another small program called VX2finder. (download it from the link below) DO NOT RUN THIS WITHOUT FURTHER INSTRUCTION FROM ONE OF THE GURUS to ensure proper use of it. Just download it and have it sitting on oyur desktop if it is needed.

First thing, it looks like you had wordwrap on in Notebook and this makes your log much harder to read when you paste it here... Please turn off wordwrap before posting the next log...

And yes, you have some major infections here... Please download CWShredder:

http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

And AboutBuster:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Then reboot to Safe Mode (tap on F8 just before Windows starts loading and select Safe Mode from the menu that appears)...

Install and run CWShredder and let it fix what it finds... Then install and run AboutBuster at least twice and save the logs...

Open an HJT scan and put checks by:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\qiyzo.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\qiyzo.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown
owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaug32.exe (file missing)

Then close all open windows except HJT and click Fix checked...

Find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javase.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysbx32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaug32.exe

You may have to set Windows to show all hidden and system files to find them... If you can't find or remove any of them, open HJT, go to Config and then to Misc Tools and use the "delete on reboot" option to enter the whole location and file... Click through to close HJT and reboot to Normal mode...

Please note if you are still having any problems when you post back, post the AboutBuster logs and post a fresh HJT log.... We may still need to deal with other infections...

ErnieK,

You posted while I was working on this.... This is actually one of those cases where it is not a good idea to run CWShredder by itself, it can make it harder to do the complete cleanup... Also, Vx2Finder is really not needed here... Thanks for the effort anyway... :)

There are a couple of things left to fix on your log, but we need to run a Vx2 tool as well...

Open HJT and put checks by:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {661A0FC8-69C3-8038-391D-4ECDFC6481A7} - C:\WINDOWS\mfcog32.dll
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ntre32.exe" /s (file missing)

Close all open windows except HJT and click Fix checked...

Keep HJT open and go to Config, Misc Tools and the use the "Delete an NT service" and paste that entire O23 item into the dialogue... Follow the directions to fix...

Go here and download L2Mfix:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Also, do a MWavScan to see if we pick up any other malware... It will produce a log in the lower right hand corner and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy the bottom part of it that has the bad items and then paste it here for review....

I have also done a mwav scan, but the log is HUGE. do you need to see all of it or just specific info?

thanks

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

For the MWavScan... as I said in the instructions, we only need the bottom of the log which has the bad files listed...

The CWS has either returned or you have been reinfected... The MWavScan info you posted was a report on what it did -- did you look at the bottom of the scan to see if there were any bad files listed?? You will need to scroll all the way to the end of the scan log to see...

Meanwhile, we need to go back to killing CWS again...

Boot into Safe Mode again and use HJT to fix:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\rjluc.dll/sp.html#83556
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E868E85F-8A2C-8F90-11C8-C70A8A47961A} - C:\WINDOWS\winna32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3rc32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\d3rc32.exe
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ntre32.exe" /s (file missing)

Then Open HJT, go to Config and then to Misc Tools and use the
"delete on reboot" option to enter the whole location and
file for these:

C:\WINDOWS\d3rc32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ntre32.exe

Then run CWShredder and let it fix what it finds... Run AboutBuster at least twice and save the logs to post back here later... Open HJT again and see if any of those items have returned... If you see a new O2, O4 or that O23 with odd characters like this: "11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I", fix them if you feel safe to do so... If you don't feel safe, we will try to deal with them later... Reboot to Normal mode, run HJT and again fix any of these items that didn't appear in Safe Mode or that have returned... Reboot once more and post a fresh HJT log with the AboutBuster logs and the MWavScan bad files if you could find them...

Did you run the MWavScan before or after the other fixes... If it was after, you have a pile of things that need to be fixed.... If it was before, it would be a good idea to run it again and see if most of that stuff is gone.... Your HJT log looks clean right now...

If MWavScan is fresh, you will need to use KillBox to kill those files...

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

This is the list to delete with KillBox... Use Rename and delete on reboot...

Yes, this was after running all the other fixes. So, used killbox to delete the listed files and the new MWav scan came back clean :)

I will keep an eye on it and post again if there is re-infection.

Many, many thanks for you patience and help. I would have been going around in circles for ages without it!

I suggest running an online virus scan or two to make sure it is all done...

Here is my prevention speech to help stay clean if it is clean:

This is a good time to set up protection against further
attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a
good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads.
All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in
popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....
