Hello,
Can anyone help? I have just upgraded my home network from a cross over wire configuration to a bt voyager 205 adsl router config.
I am having a problem with one PC which will only TX/RX at 576kbps from PC to PC, the other PC's connection speed is 100Mbps, both PC's are XP and I have changed the cable from cross over to straight. The router connects to one PC via a USB connector and the other PC ethernet.

Hello and welcome to the PC Guide Forums. You will probably not get the same speed from USB as you will from your Cat 5 cable. Could you give some more details about your setup - use something like Computer A and Computer B to differentiate the two. Also please tell how you know how fast the data is travelling across the wire. Thanks.

Hello, Computer A and Computer B used to be connected by crossover cable and now they are set up by Computer A connecting a USB cable to the adsl router and a RJ45 connector from the router to Computer B. Bothe PC's have icons in the system tray and when hovering the mouse over them the speed which they are connected at pops up.An example of my speeed test: I moved a 700MB file from Computer A to Computer B and a window pops up transfering and a time of 17mins approx, when I use RJ45 to RJ45 and no router this time is now 2mins approx.
It seems to be TX/RX at the same speed as the broadband connection speed (576Kbps) when connected through the router ??? Thanks

Interesting. I am still not 100% sure what you're wanting to know, but here are my calculations (all approximates), based on your file size of 700MB (5600Mbits).

Transfer Speed going through router is approx. 5.49 Mbps.

Transfer speed by using: "when I use RJ45 to RJ45 and no router this time"
What do you mean here? Are you connecting the two NICs directly with a crossover cable? 48Mbps- or almost 10 times faster than going through the router.

What I am having difficulties figuring out, and perhaps you could help me understand this, is if you have an NIC in each computer with RJ-45 connectors, then why are you using a USB cable from the one PC to the router?

Hi, forgot to say that I have upgraded my internetconnection from using adsl modem to voyager router.RJ45 to RJ45 was my old configuration and is just a comparison, and a lot faster too. What I wanted to know was have I set them up incorrectly for the one to be so slow?
