hello, i have some issues with a machine i'm building....everytime i try to install win xp it goes off...or it will freeze....is it mobo??? memory??? cpu???
i'll be more than glad if any of you can help me....
i already chek the power supply.....the cables....have no clue what is wrong...
Make sure all connections are secure and correct, the video card and RAM are fully seated, and do not install any other cards until the O/S is installed.
Also, use only 'Default' settings in BIOS.
If those are ok, then run memtest86 to check the RAM.
It runs from a floppy, and does not require the O/S to be installed.
Also, test each RAM individually by installing only one at a time.

check the harddrive partitions, sometimes when you botch a few installs, you will get an extra partition or two that will screw things up. do a low level format on the drive. as said b4, check connections, reseat the ram... good luck

Where in the install process do you freeze up ???? I had a similar problem and it turned out to be an LG optical drive that was not compatiable with XP, installed a diff drive and all was well.

Still having problems, i change the memory and now it doesn't freeze or shut down, but now is giving me blue screen while installin the OS, it says that it cannot install a couple of files an as soon as i skip them by presing Esc the blue screen appears, is the HDD broken??? i already format it using another computer....so i really don't know what is it...
Repartition and reformat the HD in the subject system using the Windows XP installation CD.
If the missing file problem still happens, then wipe off any smudges on the XP CD. If it has scratches, then use a different XP CD.
If no luck, then make sure the optical drive's and HD's IDE cables are securely and correctly installed with the colored stripe along the one edge next to the power lead on the back of the drives and next to pin 1 at the MB connectors, and that the drives are recognized in BIOS.
If those are ok, then install different known working IDE cables for the drives.
If no good, then try a different known working optical drive.
If that does not help, then try a different known working HD.

At what point in the process does that happen?
Is it during the initialisation of hardware?
If it's a problem of WinXP being unable to set up some item of hardware for use, I think you're expected to switch off, switch on again and Setup will skip that item of hardware at the next attempt. Unless WinXP is different to the way it used to be with earlier Windows versions.
Another solution is to run the installation with the bare minimum of hardware connected, then once Windows is installed and running you add one item at a time and boot [to have it detected and install drivers].
QUOTE [Win95a]
" To restart Setup after a failure
1. Press F3 or click the Exit button.
If the system does not respond, restart the computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. If this fails, turn off the computer, wait 10 seconds, and then turn it on again.
2. Start Setup again. Setup prompts you to use Safe Recovery to recover the failed installation. Choose the Safe Recovery option and click the Continue button. Setup will skip the portion that caused the initial failure.
3. If the computer stops again during the hardware detection process, restart Setup again, and repeat the process until the hardware detection portion of Setup is completed.
Setup stops during hardware detection.
When Setup stalls during hardware detection, you might need to disable hardware detection for a device or class of devices. Before you do this, wait until at least three minutes have passed with neither disk nor screen activity (that is, the mouse pointer cannot be moved). Some detection routines take long enough that the computer might appear to stop temporarily.
Problems occur during the file-copying phase of Setup.
If this occurs, exit Setup, restart your computer, and then rerun Setup. When prompted, select the Safe Recovery option and click Continue. The installation process should complete successfully.
If your computer stalls after all files have been copied, or if you receive an error at this point, it might be due to virus-protection software. Some computers have virus protection built into the ROM BIOS. You should disable the virus protection software or run your computer’s configuration program to disable virus checking and then restart Setup. Select the Safe Recovery option, and the installation process should complete successfully."
