Hi guys

Have been deciding to upgrade the family's computer though came to a little trouble on deciding on which CPU to choose to upgrade to. Of course since this comp is about 5 years old I'll be upgrading the m/b too, though what I'm most worried about is that I buy a CPU and Win98Se wont support it. Currently I've been thinking about the AMD Sempron CPUs though since Sempron CPUs are still quite new I was wondering if anyone would know if Win98SE can support it, cause I know CPUs like P4HT wont >_<. Because its a family's computer, it wont need much power, long as its faster than the current AMDk6 500mhz. You guys wont need to warn me about the type of ram or things like that, that would be another matter, still thinking on what board I'll be buying, though the CPU is my first concern.

So any suggestions or ideas, all appreciated ^^

Thanks

The cool thing about x86 is that all x86 CPU's are backwards compatible with all previous implementations of x86. Modern CPU's actually contain fall-back operations for software written for the original x86 CPU's! A Sempron has many new features that modern software can use... or it can seem to operate like a really really fast 8086 if need be (for old DOS stuff). Hyper-threading causes its own issues if not turned off...

In short, there's no reason a Sempron can't run Win98SE just fine. It will, however, be much faster than a K6-2 500! :D

Nothing wrong with a redneck in a Cadillac, but maybe dropping me off at the next intersection would be good, I don't want you to think I'm responsible for getting any mud on your ride...

The operating system is one thing, the speed it does it at, is another. One is hardware, the other, is oz...

I started out in a '66 big ole megahertz! My hat fell off, haven't found it to this day. But I'm still lookin' up...

Upgrading the CPU is one thing and shouldnt be problematic. Upgrading the memory is another thing and Win98 becomes unstable above 512MB - though there are ways of tweaking the OS to play nice if you go with that much memory. It would be a waste that's all.

Hmm, so it is true that Win98Se becomes unstable with 512+ ram. Thanks for confirming that for me :) .
