To make the connection so that your mobo starts

1. get a screwdriver preferably a crosshead one.
2. Go here http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/MBoard_Panel.htm
3. scroll down the page past the connector plugs to the yellow section headed ..'The Intel Front Panel Connectivity Guide'
4. The power switch connector is 'D'. I have an AMD board and the connector pins on the mobo are the same on this connector section. It will be located diagonally opposite your cpu.
5. get your crosshead screw driver and put it so that it makes contact with pins 6 & 8 ie D switch.
6. After a split second your mobo will fireup and the fans will begin to spin. Take the screw driver off.

This is a proceedure that I use to start my mobo when I have not make the Power Switch connection to the case.

I hope I have explained this clearly.

Download a copy of my diagnostic flowcharts from here
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip
and print them to leaf through.
Begin on the STARTUP chart.

If the PC isn't "dead", listen for a single short beep at startup.
Just follow the charts' directions and see where they take you and let us know.

By the way, was the Win98 installation done on that set of hardware or some other?
