Looking for help with Ad-ware

Okay, I am a failry newbie when it comes to computers, but a friend told me one of you guys might be able to help me. I have ad-ware on my computer and I can't get rid of it. I have figured out this much, it has to do with betterinternet, I think it has to with nail.exe. I have dleted it with hijack this, Ad-Aware SE, and I have went in and tried to delete it---both in working mode and safe mode. I have my system resotre part of XP turned off--as soon as I reboot there it is again, with a new name, and the nail.exe file is back again. I don't even know if I am explaining this correctly, but all I know is I need help. I need simple, LOL, instructions for a very difficult problem. Thanks for any and all help.

If you have nail.exe, you have very a bad one that will require the true heavyweights here. I would suggest waiting for them before you do anything else. At most, I would download HijackThis, run a scan, post it here and be prepared to do exactly what Budfred or Classic tell you, but wait till they tell you. Some of these things have to be attacked in a very specific order or it makes the healing process much more difficult.

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

You definitely have Nail... We can start by trying it the easy way... Download and update this, boot to Safe Mode and run it...

Let it fix what it finds... Reboot to Normal mode...

Then we need to try a deeper scan to see if pieces are left...

Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower right hand corner and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy the bottom part of it that has the bad items and then paste it here for review....

It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it...

Okay I did the ewido scan in safe mode--it caught several things and quarantined them and then I deleted them. I rebooted and ewido caught it trying to access my computer again.

I then ran the MicoWorld utility, here is the info in the bottom window

I think we got read of the worst of it... We still have a bit more to do...

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Open HJT and put checks by these (if they are still there):

Then close all open windows except HJT and click Fix checked...

okay, I did it. I started in safe mode and dbl clicked on the remove.bat--it opened and closed real quick like you said it would.

I opened and ran HJT the O4 item you wanted me to fix was there and I checked it-----------the 023 item wasn't there, at least I didn't see it-------I then ran the fix.

I went and found the ALCXMNTR.EXE and deleted it like you said. And now I am attaching a new HJT log. Thanks so much Buford for talking me thru this, you have really made it plain and simple.

I am not sure why you opted to stop Ad-Aware SE, but you need to go ahead and do the whole scan and fix those items... I would do it in Safe Mode and then run Ewido again to make sure you got it all... Then do another MWavScan and post that here with a report on any problems you are still having...

The only reason I opted to use that program was because I had it. I ran it and let it fix all it found, I did the Ewido scan and it was clean, I finished with MWavScan and got this

One final question, There are so many programs out there and they all say they are the best protection for my computer. Which ones are the best, which ones do I need to run? I have so much virus stuff I just don't know which I should run. Maybe you could tell me your opinion?

This is a good time to set up protection against further
attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a
good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads.
All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in
popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....
