i need help with my computer. a couple weeks ago my computer started slowing down then it started freezing every once in a while then freezing every time it would boot up. i thought it was a virus or os problem so i went to reinstall windows (xp pro by the way) and it froze right after i deleted the partion and when i turned it off then back on it would power up fans turn lights are on but nothing at all on the monitor. i checked it with another monitor and it didnt work. please help.

thanx 5th_horseman :) :)

hi, well i would check the processor . it sounds like it has been failing for a while the slow down , the freezeing , i ve see it alot . are you useing a surge protector ? you either took a spike or a low voltage ,or brown out . the only thing is there is most likley more damage to other parts . they might work for a while but then they will fail. I would start with replaceing the cpu . then check the ram and the mother board. seems the power supply is still ok . if its powering up the mother board. but if you have multi meter I would check the voltage of each plug to make sure there putting out the right voltage . hope this helps you .

Actually, you should check the cpu's temp in the BIOS setup to determine if it's high enough to warrant concern.
If 60 degrees or higher, then yes, that's genuine reason to do something right away. Instead of replacing though, you could detach the heat sink fan, clean it thoroughly, perhaps replace if in rough shape, use compressed air to clean out dust everywhere inside the case, and apply a thermal compound(like arctic silver)to the top of the cpu.

Then go ahead and remove the RAM, clean the underside with a pencil eraser, replace, making certain it's back in quite firmly, swap with another chip(if one's there), see if that works and if not, test with memtest86, which is downloaded onto a floppy and run for several hours.

i cant check the temp cause i cant get it to setup. i think i will test it with memtest86.
but i dont know why it is doing this i just got it about 8 months ago. is there any other way to tell if the cpu temp is bad other than bios setup? thanx alot

Only symptomatically and even that would be guessing because other problems would manifest the same way i.e, freezups. But the fact you cannot access the BIOS setup itself is a problem to be resolved. Maybe a new keyboard is needed? Maybe its connection with the motherboard?
Or perhaps a problem with the mobo itself(same thing happened to me last year on a new ASUS in fact).

If you only bought it 8 months ago, your warranty may still be valid (generally 12 months here in the UK). If you are in the warranty period, take it back to the shop and let them worry about it.

i built it and the parts were only 90 day warranty.

now when i turned it on to day it turned on then made some beebs and the power light flashed i know the beebs are code but i dont get how to use them.

what mother board are you useing and what cpu amd or intel. did you get a book with your mobo. the beep codes may be in there. i would start at the mem. it can make the board beeb if not seated properly, then reseat the video card that will also make the board beep if not seated properly, then check the cpu fan and make sure its running . if not then that may be the cause of the beeps. most boards have a fail safe if the fan stops running it will not boot and it will make beeping sound . hope this helps you out

Download a copy of my diagnostic flowcharts from here
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip
and print them to leaf through.
Begin on the STARTUP chart.

See beep codes at www.computerhope.com/beep.htm
Which manufacturer made your BIOS?
Do you remember seeing that displayed on screen?
Did you ever write it down?

Slowing down and freeze ups were probably spyware and other malware, you were close in guessing that you had a virus or OS problem, but reinstalling wasn't necessary.

Have you cleaned out all the dust inside the case yet? That definitely needs to be done, the failure to boot sounds like one of a couple of things.

Failing power supply
CPU overheated (not likely, most newer boards will shut down before they reach fatal temp range)
Bad contact somewhere.
Bad air flow, possibly exaggerated by dust.

Reseating the video card has already been advised, reseat the RAM too. Try a different power supply, check temps soon as you can get a picture and get into BIOS to take a look.

Examine the mobo itself. Somewhere (usually between the PCI slots) there should be printed the manufacturer of the mobo and the model number (such "Abit" & "IS7 v1.0" or whatever).

i got to setup and checked the temp and both the system and the cpu are at 95 deg. farenheit. i think whats wrong with it is the hard drive because i loked at cmos and it sais the hard drives not installed. i autodetect it and it shows something different than what the hard drive is. so i will try replacing the hard drive. needed a bigger one any way.
