My windows media player 10 's Burn/RIP feature, I get the message, "No CD or DVD burner has been detected. Press F5 to continue." but when I try to play it plays any CD. I can't play a DVD as well. I need your help!

First, it would help if you provided some specs. Do you have a cd or dvd 'burner' or is it just a 'ROM'? Has it ever burned anything in the past? Have you installed anything to view dvd's like WinDVD4.0 or 5 and beyond?
Was the dvd burner a part of the computer or was it installed afterwards? Did any software come with it?

You wouldn't use a "Burn/RIP" feature to play a CD or DVD. I'm not exactly sure what it is you're trying to do here.

I think hes trying to rip a cd (eg make cd tracks into mp3/wma) but like ted pointed out you need winDVD to watch dvds .I think its a codec you instal but if you bought your pc recently it should have that stuff already on it

The DVD/CD burner came with the PC and it is digitally signed. I was working because I was able to rip and burn with it. But I just don't know why it can be recognised whenever i try to rip or burn. Whenever I inserted a CD it would automatically prompt me to take an action but it doesn't. Even when i want to play a song i need to open the CD and select a song then it would play using windows media player. So what should i do?

To make sure you get prompted:
Go to: My Computer> the dvd/cd burner and right click it. Select properties, then the Autoplay tab. Click on 'Prompt me each time to take an action'. Click 'Apply' and ok to close.
Now try a cd in the drive to see what happens.

One thought.
I wonder if you may have tried to rip one of those original copy protected cd's and it disabled your burner. I seem to recall some rumours of this but never have seen or directly heard of it actually happening.
Do you have some burner software to try instead of the XP burner or Media Player's, such as Roxio or NERO? Try installing one of those to see if you can burn copies or files at least. Ripping is not always available with those programs depending on the version. Another idea is to uninstall WMP10 and redownload it from Microsoft.
You could also try removing the cd-burner in Device manager and letting Windows rediscover it on next boot, letting it install drivers for it. Then try XP's burning software or WMP's.
Beyond that, trying the burner in another pc, or trying another burner in your pc, would be the easiest to do, other than a repair install or reformat and reinstalling your os thusly starting anew.
Ok, so it wasn't one thought... :o
