View Full Version : CD drive stays open
Computer CD drive will not stay shut. As soon as I turn on the computer, the drive starts opening and shutting repeatedly until the computer is fully booted up. Then it just stays open.
WIN XP
DVD-RW - set as master - CyberLink model
CD-RW - set as slave - came with Dell computer
Any suggestions?

Full set of security scans. A HijackThis log would be nice for a start and we can go from there. My thoughts are malware but may be wrong.

I agree, start with a free online scan at Trend Micro Housecalls (http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp), then AdawareSE or Spybot S&D.
I am moving this to Applications & Security forum, that symptom is common with malware infections.
I finally got the HJT log for you to look at. I'm not seeing a lot wrong in the log at this point.

CD drive might be Bipolar. :D
All kidding aside, when did this problem start?
John0904,
Problem started after about the time the warranty on the computer expired... Sometimes it goes away. The computer was taken into another room and plugged it in, and the problem stopped - for a while. Had it taken into a computer shop and they said they fixed it, but it started doing the same thing as soon as it was plugged in and turned on. It was taken back into the old room and plugged directly into the wall instead of the surge protector, and it worked - for a while. It was working the other day before I put the DVD-RW in as a Master and changed the CD-RW to a Slave. Now the tray keeps coming open again. So I removed the cable and power plug from the drive.

Just a guess but worth a try.
First, go into safe mode, log in as admin, go to Device Manager and remove all instances of the optical drives. Reboot into BIOS.
Once in BIOS> go to your optical drives, highlight them one at a time and click enter with them on autodetect. Go to ESCD, set to manual, reboot.
Let boot into XP and see if problem persists. If not, reload burner programs if needed. If problem is still there, try reversing the drives.
If none of this helps and the warranty period is just recently expired, contact Dell and explain that it has been going on for awhile and see if they will work with you as it sounds like the drive may be bad if it's gone this far...
CD-ROM's and burners are the one component that I have to swap out most often followed by harddrives. PSU's, CPU's, mobo's and RAM seem to be like the Energizer Bunny... ;)
Fruss Tray Ted,
Somebody hooked up the CD drive again and now it is working okay . . . for now. Quirky thing.
Thanks for the input. Consider this thread closed.

You'tre running all around here declaring all your threads closed. Why? There's no need to make them locked because somebody may come along that hasn't visited the site for some time and offer a problem solver because they have had a similar experience to this one.
Be patient. Give it time. You sound young and/or frusstrayted... ;)
If noone answers any more to this thread, it will just work it's way into the archives on it's own by sliding doown the page and into obscurity.
Sorry about closing the threads. I just thought that would help reduce the forum load.
Thanks for the compliment about sounding young - I'm past middle age!
I'll eventually learn the ways of the forums.

CD drive tray was staying in great . . . until Sat. night. We had a big storm with lots of lightning. In the morning, the CD tray was open again and won't stay closed.
This brings to mind the fact that when the computer was plugged in in the kitchen, the tray stayed in. When it was plugged in in the computer room, the tray kept opening. When it was plugged directly into the wall, it would stay in . . . until something set it off and it would start opening again.
Does this sound like an electrical quirk in the CD drive? Then, does it need replacement?
