I have not added any software to my windows 98 2nd ed . It boots to the C:\Windows" prompt. When I enter 'win" it states " You are currently running in MS-DOS mode. Do you want to return to normal mode. To run Windows application again [Enter=y, ESC=n]?" when I hit enter it just reboots again. I tries using the boot disk but that didn't help. Please can anyone help me?

Hello, melloman and welcome to the PC Guide forum's.
Use the F8 key at startup to see if you can access safe mode; if so then open the MSDOS.sys file in notepad and make sure that it points to your window's installation-ie: C:\windows.
It should look something like this;
path=c:\windows
drive=c:
if you have to modify it, make sure that you uncheck it's read only properties first so that it will let you.
if this is a bit beyond your skill level then try this instead; copy the sys.com file to a standard boot floppy from someone elses system running 98se; then when you boot from the floppy simply type sys c: after the command promt, this should restore your three main system files and allow you to boot back into window's.
you could also try using extract to get an uncorrupted copy of window's system files from the CDROM; or if you prefer you could do a re-install over your current version of window's-just make sure you specify the c:\window's for the system files ( instead of any alternates it may give you ) this should not affect your data, it generally works %99 of the time.
Only other option is a complete wipe and fresh install of window's. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for welcoming me iisbob. I looked into MDDOS.SYS and the path was pointing to C:\windows. I've decided to reinstall the OS. I really appreciate the help.
