Hi, I'm a long time reader first time poster here and I can say that this site has helped me with many of my problems. But there is one that baffles me. In my home, I have 2 computers networked together with a Router and ethernet cables. One computer runs WinXP while the other runs Win2000. Well, the network works perfectly, files share easily as with the printers. The only problem is everytime I log on to the XP Machine, and want to access shared files or the printer on the Win2000 machine (from the Xp Machine) I have to type in an account that is made on that machine to access it. I was wondering if there was anyway I can set it so that whenever I log on to the Xp machine, I would automaticly also connect to the Win2000 machine. Any help appreciated!

Create an account on the Windows 2000 computer with the same user name and password that is used on the Windows XP computer.

Thanks for the help. This worked when I realized that my account on the XP was originally called owner. So it also worked over the network with that name. However, my brother has a laptop that also is in the network, and his account also was called owner. Since both our accounts have different password, he still has to manually log in. Any idea what to do there?

Classic,
This is an interesting question because I have the same setup. However, my XP laptop boots directly (no accounts, other than admin I guess). The W2K boots directly but under my account (Will), not admin. When I want to move/share files from W2K while on the XP, I have to log in as Will or Admin using the W2K password. This is more secure and I'm not sure that I'll change it but if I wanted to...
Would I create a log-in account on the XP identical to the one on W2K? I guess it's really the same amount of work--log in after boot or log in to access the other node.

The two users on the clients PC's will have to have the same user name and password as the Windows 2000 PC. So either you are your brother will have to change their password to match the server machine you are attempting to gain access to.

You could ask him to login as a different user. Once he logs in, he has as much securityas you do. Unless he is an uber-geek, you are pretty safe.

Well, I trust him. After all he is my brother. Although, on my computer, he could always get into my account by deleting my password, since we both have administrative access. As a "joke" once, he renamed all my folders on my desktop. I wanted to kill him after I doubled click on my "games" folder which was a new folder renamed to games and found only a shortcut to minesweeper there.

Your brother is a jerk. I would change your password on the owner account set up an account for him with priveleges set to user. I would give him the new user name and password and tell him that's the only way he can aceess your PC.

Thats what I did, :) Because I didn't want him getting into my account again, so I decided to keep the seperate passwords, and I changed his account to user. Have him log on everytime he needs to print.
