What program are you using to send e-mail?

What version of Norton are you using?

You did a live-update on NAV?

There a number of articles on their site. I would disable e-mail scanning and attempt to download the e-mail and then see what happens. Re-enable the e- mail scanning and try again.

Hi Classic.

Yep, I did live-updated couple days ago.

This what I try lastnight.

Disable e-mail scan
Send e-mail with and without scanning, that didn't work
went in to add and remove mail program.
sign up for new e-mail account.
send e-mail with and without scanning, that didn't work either.

I have Norton internet security, anti virus, anti spams I try all three and disable sygate too.

If you have NIS and Sygate, you are bound to have trouble. Uninstall Norton Internet security....... let us know what happens after that

Classic,

I have another question? I have spybot S&D, spywareguard, spywareblaster, sygate and soon to be avast.

Is that all I need? How about anti spams.

Thanks Classic,

I just download AVAST and deleted Norton.

You are not gona believe this, AVAST found win32:trojan.gen and pynad, 20 infected files total in my computer that Norton didn't find.

AVAST is check in the safemode.

Thanks again

I don't understand the safe mode comment. I like Avast alot. They make a great program, low memory foot print.

Let's finish with your e-mail problem then we can discuss securing your system further.

Classis,

When my computer reboot, Avast started scanning before window started "learning from you guys" that when computer in the safe mode.

I just send my friend an e-mail and this a message I get.

YOUR SERVER HAS UNEXPECTEDLY TERMINATED THE CONNECTION. POSSIBLE CAUSES OF THIS INCLUDE SERVER PROBLEM, NETWORK PROBLEMS.

Thanks

I think you need to check the server settings in the e-mail program you are using and to make sure the Sygate is set to allow outlook express to send and receive mail.

Hi Classic,

Outlook express working now.

This what I did.
Deleted Sygate from Add/remove.
Install ZoneAlarm "conflict with Avast"
No internet connection.
Deleted ZoneAlarm from Add/remove

I can get on to internet now to go this forum.

Now I don't have personal firewall.

Any suggestion?
Thanks

Re-install Sygate after downloading the newest version. Once it is installed. Use OE to send and receive mail. Sygate will allow ask you about OE and make sure you say YES and remember my selection.

Once that works, we will work on tightening up the rest of your system.

I did as you said, OE can't send e-mail with Sygate install and I can send e-mail without Sygate from OE.

I'm just wonder if Sygate conflict with DSL Gateway GT704-WG

Then the answer is to ditch OE or Ditch Sygate. I personally would download a copy of Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/).

It will transfer your mail from outlook, has great spam blocker and is a really cool e-mail client.

Let me know what you decide.

I have no prob :cross fingers: with OE and Sygate using 98SE. There must be a solution to this other than ditching one or the other.

Granted, suggesting Thunderbird is good advice, or using another firewall, but perhaps the problem will not go away due to something we are not seeing at this time.

Still being a novice to XP and only using it offline for the most part, I am still not familiar with where to find settings like I can in 98. Is Internet Options the same considering both use IE6? Maybe there is some setting we've missed that is the actual culprit.

Isn't there a repair function in OE or a way to reinstall it to render it back to a default setting? Then install a firewall and see if those default settings are compatable with the new OE install/repair.

Are some settings not holding due to not having admin rights in XP? Try in Safe Mode logged in as administrator when doing any repairs/reinstalls.

Sorry, but I'm just ramblin' and mentioning anything that comes to mind in between phone calls and projects in 'frusstration' ... :o

FTT: Normally I would agree. But in this case these 2 programs do not play well together on this PC. Since there are multiple options I would take that route rather than waste my time trying to figure out why. Life is short....

I'm ditching OE, will download Sygate again and just download Thunderbird.

Now let's tighten up the system a little.

1) Download and install SpwareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html). Enable all of the protections. Check for updates weekly.

2) Download install and update Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html). Perform a full scan after updating and fix everything in red. Re-boot

3) Download, install and update Adaware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5)

How to run an Adaware Scan::

Instructions for scanning:
A. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
B. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
C. Once the definitions have been updated:
D. Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
* Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
* Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)

* Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
E. Close all programs except ad-aware.
F. Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
G. Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
H. After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

4) Download and Install Hijackthis (http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41) into a permanent folder. Choose the option to scan and create a log. Post the contents of the log here for review to fule out any spyware.

5) Once the system is free of spyware, run Windows Update and make sure your OS is fully patched and up to date.

6) Go on-line and perform an AV scan at housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/).

7) Keep your temp and TIF folders empty.

8) Keep you AV software up to date.

You should be good to go.
