hello...
I recently was looking around my bios and noticed that there was a setting for optimum performance...so i selected and rebooted ...well right after the onboard ata was loading where normally the windowsxp boot screen should be was a message that said something like this:: Can not load windows file missing windows\system32(i think) then it said i might be able to fix if i put windows cd back in and run setup .....So i did and same message appeared ...then i rebooted to bios setup and loaded defaults and it works fine ....I have tried the optimum setting again and same results ..... Am i missing something...?? I was just thinking that optimum would make it run better ??

Normally optimum settings will crank up the RAM timings.
Evidently your particular Brand of 512MB RAM can't handle
the faster settings.
Luck.

Ok I checked out the ram that is in there and did some research on the numbers on the ram to see what i got ...well the first thing is i have 2 different brands :O one is NANYA and the other MICRON ...it seems they are both 2.5 ck...and pc2100 256mb's each ..so my question is are these good brands ??? and is bad to have two different brands of ram?? Could it possibly make a difference to get Crucial ram??then I might be able to run Bios in Optimum settings??
Thx

You may want to install one stick at a time.
Then try the optimum setting with each.
This should tell you what stick is unstable or weak.
Differences in sticks can cause major problems when you start pushing them.
I prefer and use Crucial memory in most of the systems I setup.
The cost is off set by the piece of mind knowing it is going to work,

I don’t know If I would call it Bad ram.
But Yes mismatched or weak ram can cause some unpredictable behavior

RICK THANKS ...I found the problem http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif I did like u said and removed one stick of ram and then changed the bios to optimum and guess what it booted and was running as if all the ram was there ...so I decided to run 3dMark2001 and I got the highest score Ive ever got http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif over 10,000 pts..thats like 800pts more than before with the less ram..I guess with the settings at optimum im getting better performance, obviously.lol ..now the other thing I found was I tried to swap to just the other stick of ram and it worked great...then put both back in and didnt work...so it must be the combination of two different brands !! now Im gona look into some Crucial Ram ..Im a real gamer and was thinking about 2 sticks of 512mb ddr ram is that overkill or good ??and the memory calculator @ Crucial.com said this ::
DDR PC2100 • CL=2.5 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 7.5ns • 2.5V • 64Meg x64
is what is for my mother board calls for... should I just trust thats the only\best kind for my mobo or what???
AND THANKS AGAIN

Personally i use Nanya ( i have two 512 PC2400 DDR sticks ), both are running just a little faster than normal.
I agree with the above and advise people to not mix/match RAM; at worst you'll get wierd problems, at best it'll run ok, then suddenly start giving you " hiccups ".

Unless you have a Program that requires 1024 ram. Or you intend to do some serious Graphics editing 2 x 512 is over kill. IMHO
Like iisbob I also have 2x512 But I don’t have any games installed
I have a Graphics work station
The Brand you use is up to you.
Check the sites for return or RMA policy.
In regard to compatibility issues with their recommended Ram..
Go with the Brand you feel comfortable with.

ok...think I found the problem..I decided to put the 2 sticks back in but skip slot 2 ...and use just slot 1 and 3 ...and booted with the optimum settings and its workn good soo far ....does this mean my mobo's second ram slot is caput?? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif guess ill just use 1 and 3 instead of sending to get fixed I think the 1gig of ram will be good http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I’ve heard of this happening before.
I don’t recall the exact MB it was on.
But the solution was as you have found on your own.
To install the sticks in mem slot 1 and 3
I also have one of those picky boards.
With unbuffer ram I can only use 2 of the 4 slots
With ecc-reg buffered I can use all 4 slots.
My system runs stable as a rock with 2 or 4 slots filled configurations

winXP doesn't like to allow BIOS setting changes to certain things.
