While browsing the forums unlogged, I noticed Kontera has added an ad to the word "Love" in my signature.

"CLICK HERE to meet sexy singles on passion.com"

Is this really nessesary or should I just go ahead and change my sig?

:(

Well, I don't think Charles has any control over what words are targeted by Kontera for ads, so you might either have to live with it or change to something else...which might in turn contain a word Kontera likes...just make sure you don't use a signature with the word "viagra" in it, they'll hit that one for sure. :D

Sorry about that Steve.

In general, it is only supposed to trigger based on techie-stuff. But for the first week or two it is more generic. That should go away in the next day or two I hope.

Charles,
I went over to look at a link Sylvander posted while I was logged in here in the Discussion Forums and the Kontera stuff is active and slowing the browser while there. The stuff is like kudzu.

Correction: the link was http://www.pcguide.com/byop/byop_In...HeatsinkFan.htm
which should be Pete's post on component identification.

That's no a valid link, PrntRhd. Looks like you copied the shortened version of a long link that the VB software displays...

I often read messages here from work without logging in and have noticed that a number of the ads have referred to rogue antispyware programs... That is techie stuff, but it is also scam stuff... It does not appear that Kontera does much screening of who they advertise for at all...

A past article from eWeek (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1826004,00.asp) that's very closely related to this. There have been several such pieces written recently about the adverts and advert mechanisms and some of what they actually wind up marketing and/or propagating. "Does Google Promote Spyware?" Now one could ask, "Does PCGuide promote rougue antispyware?"

I really don't think Google has given a whole lot of thought about what's being advertised anymore than I think Charles is aware in advance of every product and service advert that will now show up in his pages. Automated marketing will, it seems, make no distinction--or at best, very little distinction--in what the product is or who the vendor might be. Kontera provides the mechanism and they make money. Google and others, even PCGuide provide the venue, and they make money. And of course, the vendors make money. Unregulated (or nearly so) free market enterprise operating at its best...and worst all at the same time.

The unfortunate byproduct is that you have to wade through a vermin infested swamp to look at a few Orchids. Nasties are there so watch where you step...or click... and as Budfred's sig says, "Caveat Emptor".
