Dont know the specs of mates pc but here is the prob.

Trying to help a friend cant get to the pc as he lives to far away . he is trying to reinstall win98 he is doing it from boot up floppy he has used the format command everthing ok up till there , then puts win 98 cd in ( tried anothe one same prob ) then the pc freezes & he gets a black box no info .

This is his description .

ok.....I have tried everything about 20 times, in different ways and it still freezes in the same spot.....that spot is when windows 98 setup page comes up it says press continue to start the setup wizard...it goes up to 100% and instead of going on to the next step which is copying windows 98 setup files it freezes.....something goes click in the tower, you can hear it when it clicks, and black box comes on the screen and freezes the rest of the setup wizard! I have even tried different windows 98 cd's.

Any help would be gratefull as I say win 98 was ok before he reinstalled but just wanted fresh start .

Sounds like the harddrive is pooched.

Does the pc beep once for successful POST? If so:

Have him run the diagnostics for his harddrive abailable at the manufacturer's site. Also check all cables for looseness.

We had a thread recently here that the same thing was happening, if I find it I'll link to it later.

Has he made any changes to his configuration that may have led up to this?
