i built a comp myself and after about 2-3 weeks my dvd and dvdr drives said goodbye. They dont show up at boot and the comp will not go into windows with the drives connected. If i disconnect the drives then the comp will boot as normal and run just fine.
I dont believe that i could have gotten 2 drives that died at the same time so i have no idea what could be wrong.

info if it matters: Gigabyte mobo k8 (something)
Pacific digital dvdr drive i forget the dvdrom name
wd 120g harddrive
Also i was using powerdvd for the first time and pushed play and it froze my comp and after i rebooted this problem happend.

Just one "bad device or a connection to it" can have knock on effects to other devices and bootability.

Check/Double-Check Power and Data Cables, Connections and Jumpers. Try just one device on its own, a new cable and try and narrow things down that way.
