Have you actually tried testing the bandiwdth that you are getting at various times of the day? During peak usage hours things can slow down a bit, so take that into account.

You can try this site for testing the bandwidth you get, it seems reasonably accurate to me. Bandwidth Test (http://www.testmy.net)

You can try testing at various times of the day to see how far off your connection actually is from the stated speed.

Eric,
I want to thank you profusely for showing me those links. I am on gwi.net broadband and I was getting 1/3rd the average gwi subscribers speed on this 98SE Duron850 pc. After following directions and downloading a registry tweaking tool, I am now slightly faster than the average subscriber! See results below:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 1956 Kbps about 2 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Download Speed is:: 239 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (main)
Test Time:: Wed May 25 2005 19:48:22 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
Bottom Line:: 35X faster than 56K 1MB download in 4.28 sec
Diagnosis: Looks Great : 8.37 % faster than the average for host (gwi.net)
