Hi!
This is my first post on here. I have a SONY Vaio PCG-F420 and I can't find a BIOS update anywhere. I even went to the support for my model and there is no BIOS update anywhere. Where can I find an update for my BIOS and chipset?

I'm having trouble with some hardware (cardbus wireless D-Link) . Everytime I restart it looses the IP configuration and won't connect to the internet. I have to reconnect to the router everytime I want to use the internet. The master tech at D-link said I need to update my bios and chipset.

If you can help, good carma coming your way or a million thanks from me - your choice. ;) Thanks, Joe

Welcome to PC Guides! Here is the support for the laptop: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCGF420&UpdateType=Updates

There doesn't seem to be any BIOS update, so logically, there must be no update.

So anyways, enough with the "Vulcan" logic. I would recommend installing all the updates that are available.

Also, look on D-Link's website for an update for the wireless cardbus.

Well, I hope that this helped somewhat... Hope that any of your next problems can be solved easier than this.

Once again, Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome. I'm studying for my A+ cert. So, hopefully this site will come in handy and I can contribute.

D-link's site has nothing and neither does Sony. I talked to 3 techs from D-link and they can't figure it out. The last tech recommended the bios/chipset update. Every time I restart, I have to reconnect to my wireless router with the configuration utility for the wireless card. The wireless router works flawless - I'm running 2 other computers off of it. I disabled all other ways of access so that this card is the only thing looking for an IP address. I'll have to call tech again I guess.

A fix for the d-link wireless cardbus on win98. The problem was the encryption. Everything was fine, but for some reason the d-link utility that runs at startup doesn't hold the right settings. I was using a HEX key (it worked fine on my other computer). It wouldn't remember the HEX key setting, so I changed to ASC II. It keeps the new setting fine.

Thanks guys! joe
