Check the backup folder
You may get lucky and find the original files backup file.
If she did in fact Over write the original file with a new file of the same size or larger.
Then it is gone ..

Would it not be possible to recover the doc using something like PCINSPECTOR? Or even the copy (if made) of the original if it has been deleted automatically?

This is FREEWARE

It could be helpful to know some more specifics? How actually did she overwrite it. Did she save another file with the same name on top of it by having agreed to replace it with a file of the same name, etc, etc? Or did she first delete it and then create a new file with the same name, etc, etc. Also which OS and File System is involved here.
If the file (or remnants of it) are still on the hard drive and they are truly vital then absolutely stop using the hard drive in the computer as it is. Only you know how important this document is to you and you should minimise any further chances of overwriting it if it is there somewhere. If you want to try DIY recovery then GetDataBack (for FAT or NTFS as appropriate) from www.runtime.org should find it if it is still on your HDD. But you should slave the drive onto another computer and run the program from the other PC. Read about using it before diving in. Professional recovery services could also be tried but they are expensive so only go that way if you only pay IF they are successful.
