got a no name here that has onboard everything!

supposedly bought from a computer show, had win98se, customer put winME in, it messed up, wound up at my place.

I fdisked, repartitioned, format, reinstall clean win98se full OEM version.

now I notice several things in device man that are messed up (not correctly installed)>> that's nothing new.

I lots of times have to go get drivers for this or that, but this machine has the onboard stuff.. video, sound, ethernet, modem.... all of it.

seems that should be in the BIOS right??

I'm not used to messing with this much onboard stuff all integrated toaster effect.

lol

aren't these things in the BIOS??

Hi Sea.
Just a thought. If you have everything onboard, it will still need the drivers.

To help identify things, try a little program I found some time ago PCITREE. It display a lot of info about chipsets, and all the other bits that are connected. (Even if onboard)

Might help you find the right drivers. Can't remember where I found it but I expect that Google would. Hope that helps a bit

thanks David- I wonder if it will identify where windows cannot??

I have found the (I hope) drivers for the onboard sound "cm18738/pci".

the CTX1451 video stuff was not available on the CTX website.

wondering if I need to remove these just to see all what they are.

the ethernet is identified as a "Network Anywhere NC100"

no such animal- so may have to pull these things to get the FCC #'s-

his price just went up for this repair- that much I do know

Network everywhere actually uses a linksys chipset; go here-Network everywhere (http://www.networkeverywhere.com/downloads.html) for their driver files { it's the manufacturer of my nic-xp loaded generic linksys drivers for it } and i would get WCPUID to indentify your chipset graphics/audio.

Where is the original installation disk that came with e-machine. It's a system restore disk that puts the computer back to the way it was fresh out of the box. If the owner doesn't have it, go to www.emachines.com (http://www.emachines.com) and see if you can purchase one.

iisbob- I forgot all about wcpuid, I have it on my "toolkit" cd.

and had found the drivers for the card, however there is also a SiS SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, chip on the MB. so do I need that as well??

and I have found the "CMI8738/PCI drivers.

now, looking at the modem (can't hardly tell it is one except it has a place to plug a phone line and a phone) it is not only plugged into the PCI slot, it has another plug going into the MB, just like the onboard sound- so is this the HSP56 riser thing?

wcpuid again right?

classic software- you seem to think it's an e-machine- and it may well be, but it says "Expert" on the front..lol

so your guess is as good if not better than mine -

no Restore Disk ..(that would be lovely!)

mjc- what chipset??

going to try wcpuid.

#1) someone remind me to look inside the case prior to quoting a redo price.

sys info:

Intel celeron @ 601MHz- PPGA Socket 370

BIOS is flashable and socketed so it can be upgraded

**note: Video BIOS is too old

My question is: how is all this CRAP cheaper then real modems and cards??

and WHY- does this have a built in onboard ETHERNET AS WELL AS A SEPERATE CARD???????????

?

Sea, that's a PC CHIPS board. Check out their website. Their main one is in Taiwan I think and that site would probably have more of what you need than the U.S. site. Can't remember the URL. Just do a google search for PC CHIPS. You should be able to find all drivers for all the onboard stuff and a manual as well.
