Hello all,
I stopped by here yesterday looking for some reassurance that I hadn't lost my mind.
My assistant took two unbuilt PCs home over the weekend to build for one of our faculty ( we are at a high school)
After assembling the components, simple build no peripherals or expansion cards, just basic Via MB, drives and ps/case, she was unable to install XP. The machine did a full power off as it finshed copying the basic install files/utils from a CD. Hmmm. After half a day of navigating through BIOS settings etc. I found that the default standard settings weret he problem and specifially the Standard paralell port was set to SPP (standard) and the MB had ECP port that was causing the shutdown as soon the install routine paged the port ( my guess)
We thought it was likely to be hardware/driver related, but suspected the DDR ram settings as the possible source.
After exchanging the RAM and reconfigging the memory settings, then going the the jumpers, it was time to go through BIOS one page at a time till the culprit revealed itself. :D
Whew, what a pain. But it was nice to resolve this.
So just wanted to give back a little to the group as a way to introduce myself.
thanks
