View Full Version : Playing Bejeweled, WMA files, and DVD's crashes my computer

When listening to music that I have downloaded, or watching a DVD movie, or playing Bejeweled that I downloaded for my wife, suddenly my computer emits a high pitch and freezes. The high pitch continues until I hard boot the computer. This happens when I am running just the one application or many.

I have a Gateway PIII, 1000, 512 mb of ram. I have a Leadtek Windows 2000 XP Deluxe video capture card, Comcast Motorolla Surfboard modem, and Soundblaster Audigy II Value sound card. Everything else was standard with the computer when I bought it new. The only other thing that I can think of is it has digital speakers.

I have had problems with Windows XP Professional corrupting itself when I stepped up to a 160 GB hard drive but have solved that problem by partitioning the drive.

Anybody have the answer to my problem or at least a good guess? Or if this problem has come up before, could you send me to that thread?

Thanks in advance!

The CPU may be overheating.
What is its temperature, and also the system's temperature, when the high pitched alarm sounds off?

I don't know about system or CPU heat. Where do I find info on how to measure the heat and solutions to heat problems?

Again, Thanks!

You may be able to find the temperatures in your MB's BIOS.
If so, then you can d/l the 'MB Monitor' program at the following site, which will mirror the BIOS data on your Desktop for convenience:
