View Full Version : Removing XP
Hi All,
How do I remove XP Pro from my C Drive so I can install Win 2000 first and XP second. Both partition have XP Pro on them. I've tried formatting and fdisk neither work.
Thanks,
kfh.
Boot form the Windows 2000 CD, choose to delete all partitions, create new partions, install the OS's.

I use Dariks Boot and Nuke (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/dban.html) to wipe the drive first. Then use the partition and format tools on the M$ installation disks. The quick wipe feature usually does the trick.

You dont HAVE TO remove it all. After installing Win2K you just need to repair the WinXP boot processes. A full repair installation shouldnt be necessary. Booting to the WinXP recovery console and running fixboot should rewrite the boot sector and running bootcfg /rebuild would rebuild the boot.ini file.
Also if you have an available partition (primary) for Win2K you could use a boot manager to hide the WinXP partiton while you install Win2K and after it is installed use the manager to choose between the two installations instead of using a boot.ini file to make the selection.
Of course starting over with a nice clean disk and new partitions has certain attractions; but its not mandatory.

So far you have only told us about C.

The dos versions are crude tools. Better use a third party partitioner or either Win2K or WinXP's disk management (during the installation) to delete, create or format any partitions.
