sony vaio too slow!

got here a moth old sony vaio notebook bseries with windows XP and i find it odd why is it too slow. what i did so far:
run antivirus- found none.
run spyware - none
configure system configuration and disable all the startup - same.
run a utility that check my system and it says i need to install a ecc memory on it. any suggestion? would that help if i upgrade it with a non ecc memory?

Some system specs would be nice, we have no idea what we're dealing with, we can't offer an advice concerning a completely unknown machine...Laptop memory is more expensive in general, sometimes very proprietary and usually fits in a socket located on bottom, most have a small plastic cover and sometimes a small picture to indicate what is under that cover.
