What board? Is there a sound card? Have you tried the speakers on another pc or tried them with a portable device like a Walkman or similar?

What led up to this problem? Please give more history and details.

Try connecting the speakers to the headphone outlet on a CD drive and play a music CD.
Do they then produce output?

We need a little more detail as to what you've tried. Did you do any of the things we mentioned already?

Did you try the speakers with another source?

I'm not sure if this is just a Windows 98 thing but you can try going to Start> Run> type in dxdiag in the box and testing for sound with the DirectX diagnostic tool if it opens.

Make sure the speaker cord is plugged into the correct jack. You'd be surprised ow often it's really simple things...

Double click the speaker icon in the task bar, make sure all the sliders are at least halfway up, and nothing is muted but the Microphone. Unmute it later if it is needed.

Check Device manager to be sure it is installed and does not have any errors. Errors will be shown by an exclamation point inside a yellow triangle. To get to Device manager right click on the "My COmputer" icon and cllick Properties then the Device manager tab.

Boot into Safe Mode (tap the F8 key during boot, from the menu choose Safe mode). Check Device Manager and if you see more than one sound card listed, including copies of the same one, remove them ALL. Reboot, have the sound card drivers handy and reinstall it.

And please provide the information and details requested in the previous replies, that will help us a lot.

Also, do the speakers (or one of them) have a separate PowerOn and/or Volume Control on them?

it has the internet port on it also headphone, and joystick on it, a combo card.Sounds like an ISA card. The only modem/MIDI/audio combo cards that I've seen are all ISA. In that case, there should be a set of jumpers on it somewhere for configuration of the proper IRQ. You'll have to do some hard-core work on this one. ISA cards aren't like PCI cards - no PnP!!
