If I wanted to upgrade my compaq's motherboard/cpu, will a retail board fit in that case? Or will I have to buy a new case? thanks.

Give us some more information about your PC. The Exact model number will help in finding out. Some are able to be upgraded and some may not be. If it can be, it may only be able to accept a mATX board, but we will need the info first. Another thing that you should consider is that you will probably need other parts to go along with this upgrade, such as memory (unless your existing memory will match). You will almost surely have to upgrade your PSU also, the stock ones are usually very underpowered.

Edit: You can also download and run Everest (http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en) and post the info about your existing motherboard along with the Model number of your PC.
